Chapter 4 - The Siege at the Cabin

"Lily," Claire whispered, her voice dropping into an urgent, terrifying register. She slammed the laptop closed, ripping the USB drive from the port and shoving it into her pocket.
"Mommy?" Lily looked up from her coloring book, sensing the sudden shift in the air.
"Get under the table right now. Do not make a sound. Do not come out until I tell you to. Understand?"
"Mommy, you're scaring me—"
"Do it!" Claire hissed, gently shoving her daughter under the heavy oak dining table and pulling the long checkered tablecloth down to the floorboards.
She grabbed the heavy iron poker from the stone fireplace, her knuckles white as she gripped the cold metal. She crept toward the front window, pulled the corner of the plaid curtain back an inch, and peered out into the bright morning sunlight.
Two black SUVs were parked sideways across the gravel driveway, blocking the exit. Four men in dark tactical gear, wearing matte black body armor with no insignia, were fanned out across the clearing. They moved with terrifying, silent precision—not local cops, not repo men, but high-end private contractors trained for extraction and liquidation.
In the lead was a tall man with a shaved head and a jagged scar cutting through his left eyebrow. He held a silenced automatic rifle casually across his chest, his cold eyes scanning the perimeter of the cabin.
He stopped directly in front of the front porch.
Claire’s heart hammered so hard she was certain they could hear it through the wood. How did they find us so fast? she thought frantically. The USB drive... it had a tracer built into the firmware. Nathaniel hadn't just given her evidence; he had unwittingly painted a target on their backs.
"Claire Donovan!" a voice called out from the porch, amplified slightly by a tactical comms unit. It was calm, polite, and deeply menacing. "We know you're in there. You have something that belongs to Mrs. Lockwood. Hand it over, and no one gets hurt. Not you, and certainly not the little girl."
The mention of Lily’s name sent a surge of pure, feral rage through Claire’s veins. Fear vanished, replaced by the lethal instinct of a mother protecting her cub.
"Go to hell!" Claire shouted through the heavy oak door.
The man with the scar didn't blink. He raised a heavy metal crowbar toward the doorknob.
"You have five seconds to unlock this door before we come through it," he said evenly. "One... two..."
Claire looked around the room in frantic desperation. There was no back door—just a small pantry window that opened into the root cellar. It was too small for an adult, but...
"Lily!" Claire hissed, dropping to her knees and lifting the tablecloth.
Lily’s tear-streaked face peered out from the darkness beneath the table.
"Listen to me, baby," Claire said, grabbing her daughter by the shoulders. "You see that little window in the pantry? The one with the latch?"
Lily nodded, trembling.
"I need you to crawl through there, run down the hill toward the creek, and hide under the big fallen cedar tree by the water. Stay there. Do not move, no matter what you hear. Mommy is going to come find you. Do you understand?"
"Mommy, I want to stay with you—"
"Lily, look at me!" Claire’s voice was fierce, filled with absolute authority. "You are my brave girl. Run to the cedar tree. Now!"
Lily whimpered, but she scrambled backward out from under the table, grabbed her stuffed rabbit from the floor, and darted toward the pantry.
Three... four...
Crash!

The front door splintered inward, the heavy deadbolt snapping like a toothpick as the door flew open against the interior wall.
Claire swung the iron poker with all her might, aiming squarely for the lead operative's head.
