Chapter 2 - The Ghost on the FDR Drive

The 2011 Honda Civic rattled violently as Claire merged onto the FDR Drive at 4:15 a.m., the engine screaming in protest as she pushed the accelerator to seventy miles per hour. The Manhattan skyline rose across the dark water to her left like a jagged wall of obsidian teeth, glittering with thousands of windows that never slept. Somewhere up there, in a glass penthouse overlooking Central Park West, Nathaniel Chase was either trapped, broken, or already gone.

Lily was fast asleep in the passenger seat, her head resting against the door frame, still clutching her stuffed rabbit. Every time a semi-truck rumbled past in the opposite lane, the Civic shook, and Claire gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned the color of bone.

She couldn't go back to the apartment. If Nathaniel had been tracked, or if Vanessa Lockwood’s private security detail was already monitoring his communications, it wouldn't take them long to figure out where he had mailed the doll. Postmarks were digital now; every package scanned at a Queens sorting facility left a breadcrumb trail straight to their doorstep.

Her phone buzzed in the center console.

Claire jumped, her eyes darting to the glowing screen. A text message from an unknown number.

CLAIR DONOVAN. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF RUNNING. NATHANIEL IS ALREADY LOOKING FOR YOU. COME BACK TO THE CITY.

Claire’s breath hitched. She slammed her foot down harder on the gas. How did they get my number? she thought, panic surging hot and fast through her veins. She had used burner phones in the past for job applications, but her primary cell was tied to her social security number, her bank account, her entire digital footprint.

A second text arrived immediately after.

THE USB DRIVE CONTAINS FILES THAT DO NOT BELONG TO YOU. RETURN THEM TO 740 PARK AVENUE BY NOON, OR YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING—STARTING WITH THE CHILD IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.

The blood drained from Claire’s face. She looked over at Lily. Her daughter was breathing softly, completely oblivious to the shadow that had just fallen across their lives.

740 Park Avenue. The most exclusive residential address in the world. Home to billionaires, hedge fund titans, and dynasties that shaped global politics. That was where Vanessa Lockwood lived. That was the fortress Nathaniel had traded his soul to enter.

And they were already hunting them.

Claire didn't have a plan. She didn't have a lawyer she could trust. The police were out of the question—if Vanessa’s family owned judges, they owned precincts too. But she had four hundred dollars, a full tank of gas, and a black USB drive holding secrets dangerous enough to make men in expensive suits track a terrified mother across a bridge at four in the morning.

She took the exit for the George Washington Bridge, pointing the nose of the Civic north toward the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The trees loomed like black giants against the indigo sky as she crossed the state line into New Jersey, putting distance between herself and the city that never let its ghosts rest.

As the sun began to bleed over the horizon in streaks of bruised purple and gold, Claire reached into her pocket and felt the cold, hard edge of the thumb drive.

She had no idea what was on it. But she knew one thing for certain: Nathaniel had trusted them with his life. And whether he was alive or dead, Claire was going to find out why.
