Chapter 6 - The Alliance in the Shadows

By dusk, the temperature in the Catskills had plummeted near freezing. Claire and Lily had hiked three miles upstream through the freezing creek bed, avoiding the gravel roads entirely, until they reached an abandoned railway maintenance shack she remembered from her teenage years.

The shack had a rusted metal roof, a broken lock, and a pile of old burlap sacks in the corner that provided minimal insulation against the mountain chill.

Claire sat on a overturned crate, using a corner of her damp shirt to clean the dirt and blood from Lily’s scraped knees. Lily had finally fallen asleep, exhausted by the terror of the day, her head resting against Claire’s lap.

Claire pulled the black USB drive from her pocket. It was miraculously undamaged.

She stared at it in the dim twilight filtering through the dusty window. Nathaniel had risked everything to get this data out of Lockwood Holdings. He had used a cheap voice recorder, a dirty doll, and a desperate gamble on his six-year-old daughter because he knew he couldn't trust a single soul in his inner circle.

My Millionaire Wife Isn't Human Enough to Let Me Live.

The phrase took on a chilling new meaning. Vanessa Lockwood wasn't just a ruthless businesswoman; she was a sociopath who viewed human lives as line items on a spreadsheet, easily erased when they became liabilities. And Nathaniel had discovered her master ledger—the blueprint of a decade's worth of corporate murders disguised as tragedies.

A sudden tap on the corrugated metal wall of the shack made Claire freeze.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

It wasn't the wind. It was deliberate. Three rhythmic knocks.

Claire gently lifted Lily’s head, placed her jacket under her daughter as a pillow, and crept toward the rotting wooden door with a heavy iron bolt in her hand.

She pressed her ear against the wood.

"Claire," a low, gravelly voice whispered from the outside. "Put the iron down. If I wanted you dead, you'd have been finished back at the cabin when my former associates showed up."

Claire’s eyes widened. She recognized that voice from the audio files on the flash drive—or rather, from the peripheral security logs. It was Marcus Vance, the former head of security for Lockwood Holdings who had mysteriously vanished six months ago after questioning the "accidental" death of a junior partner.

"Marcus?" Claire whispered against the crack in the door.

"Open it," the voice hissed. "We don't have much time. Vanessa’s private satellites picked up your laptop's MAC address before you fried it. They're triangulating your cell tower pings right now, even with the phone turned off."

Claire slid the rusted bolt back and pulled the door open an inch.

Standing in the shadows of the pine trees was a man in his late forties, wearing a worn canvas hunting jacket, a dark wool cap pulled low over his forehead, and carrying a scoped hunting rifle. His face was weathered, with a jagged scar running down his right jawline.

"You're Marcus," Claire said, keeping the iron bolt ready in her grip.

"I am," Marcus said, stepping into the dim light of the doorway. He glanced inside at sleeping Lily, and his hard expression softened just a fraction. "And you’re the waitress from Queens who accidentally caught a tiger by the tail."

"Where is Nathaniel?" Claire demanded, stepping forward. "Is he alive?"

Marcus looked away, staring into the dark woods for a long moment before meeting her eyes. "Truth? I don't know. When I pulled him out of the Lockwood estate garage two nights ago, he had a bag over his head and a needle in his arm. I managed to intercept the transport van, but his security detail swarmed us before I could get him into my truck. I lost him."

Claire felt the floor drop out from under her. "Lost him? You mean they took him back?"

"I mean he's inside the fortress at 740 Park Avenue," Marcus said grimly. "Or worse, he's at their private estate in Newport. Either way, if he’s still breathing, he’s locked in a medical ward under heavy sedation while Vanessa tries to figure out how much of the ledger he copied."

"He copied everything," Claire said, pulling the USB drive from her pocket and holding it up. "I have it right here."

May you like

Marcus stared at the small black drive as if it were a live grenade. A slow, grim smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"Well," Marcus said quietly. "Then it looks like you and I have the same problem. You want your husband back, and I want to put an end to the Lockwood dynasty once and for all."
