Chapter 6 - The Blue Envelope

Inside the envelope was a thick stack of medical documents, a bank ledger, and a handwritten letter from Rose.

I began to read her words aloud, my voice cracking with emotion:

My dearest Dad,

If you are reading this, it means I am no longer there to protect my sweet girls. I am so sorry I didn't tell you the truth. Arthur was monitoring my every move. He threatened to harm you, Dad. He said if I went to the police, he would use his connections to make sure you lost your pension and your home.

But I didn't lay down and die. I fought.

Arthur has been slowly poisoning my daily tea with high doses of heavy metals—specifically thallium, which he sourced from his chemical manufacturing plant. The doctors thought it was an aggressive form of ALS, but I kept copies of my private blood tests done by an independent lab out of state. You will find them in this envelope.

Furthermore, Arthur and Chloe have been embezzling millions from my family’s charitable trust to fund their upcoming wedding and purchase their new estate in the Bahamas. I have compiled every transaction, every forged signature, and every shell company they used.

Do not let him get away with this, Dad. Protect our girls. Use this to destroy him.

With all my love, forever, Rose.

Lucy and I sat in silence. The horror of what my daughter had endured was unspeakable. Arthur hadn't just been a bad husband; he was a murderer in slow motion.

"We go to the police," I breathed, my hands shaking so violently I could barely hold the paper.

"No," Lucy said, her voice chillingly calm. "The police here are friends with Arthur's future father-in-law. They'll sweep it under the rug. We have to do this publicly. Where they can't hide."

"What are you planning, Lucy?"

"Their wedding," Lucy said, looking up at me. "It's in two weeks. The biggest social event of the year in Savannah. Everyone will be there. The media, the city council, their wealthy investors. We destroy them where it hurts the most."
