Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

Daniel felt as though the floor beneath his feet had suddenly dissolved into thin air. His heart slammed against his ribs with such violence that he had to reach back and grip the edge of the mahogany desk to keep his balance.
"You're insane," Daniel breathed, his face draining of all color. "Claire died three years ago. We had one embryo left at the Reproductive Health Institute in Minneapolis. It was destroyed. I signed the authorization forms after her funeral."
"You signed forms, Mr. Whitfield," Maria said, her voice growing stronger as the secret she had carried for three years finally spilled out into the air. "But you didn't read them. You were out of your mind with grief. You handed everything over to Doctor Arthur Vance."
The name Doctor Arthur Vance hit Daniel like an electric shock.
Vance had been Claire’s primary fertility specialist—a prominent, highly respected physician who had managed their IVF process from the very beginning. He was also a former board member of Crestview Medical, the corporate healthcare system Daniel’s investment group had audited two years ago.
"Doctor Vance told me the embryo was non-viable," Daniel said, his mind racing through years of dark memories, searching for a single inconsistency. "He told me the storage unit suffered a liquid nitrogen seal failure forty-eight hours after Claire passed away. He said the genetic material was degraded."
"He lied to you," Maria wept, stepping closer to the desk, her hands shaking as she pulled a faded blue folder from beneath her apron. "He didn't destroy it. He sold it."
"He what?"
"Doctor Vance ran an illegal offshore surrogacy and private implantation ring out of a boutique clinic in Chicago," Maria explained, opening the folder with trembling fingers. "He targeted wealthy, grieving patients who had high-grade genetic material stored in his facility. He lied about equipment failures, forged destruction certificates, and sold those embryos to private brokers for hundreds of thousands of dollars."
Daniel took the blue folder from her hands. Inside were medical records, internal lab transfer logs, and a certified birth record from a private surgical center in rural Wisconsin dated two years and four months ago.
Child Name: Baby Girl Fields (Temporary).
Mother / Surrogate: Maria Elena Alvarez.
Genetic Father: Daniel Edward Whitfield.
Genetic Mother: Claire Elizabeth Whitfield.
Daniel stared at the paper. His name was typed right there in black ink. Beside it was Claire’s full name, her social security number, and the unique cryogenic tracking code assigned to their second embryo four years ago.
"I was the surrogate, Daniel," Maria sobbed, wiping her cheeks with her apron. "I was twenty-four years old. My husband had just died in an industrial accident, leaving me with three hundred thousand dollars in medical debt and an eviction notice. Doctor Vance’s agency approached me in Chicago. They offered to pay off all my debts and give me fifty thousand dollars in cash if I carried a baby to term for a wealthy client in Europe."
Daniel’s chest expanded and contracted rapidly. He couldn't breathe. He couldn't process the monstrous reality unfolding before him.
"What happened to the client in Europe?" Daniel managed to ask, his voice hoarse.
"There was no client in Europe," Maria said, her voice dropping into a whisper. "Three weeks before I was due to give birth, I discovered what Vance was really doing. He wasn't giving these babies to loving families. He was selling them through an unvetted, unregistered private broker network to international buyers who didn't want background checks."
Maria fell to her knees right in front of Daniel, looking up at him with raw, desperate tears.
"I couldn't let them take her, Daniel," Maria cried. "When I gave birth to her in that quiet clinic, I looked at her face. She didn't look like me. She had these deep, dark, beautiful amber eyes... the same eyes I saw in the photographs of your late wife printed in the medical journals Vance kept in his office. I knew who she belonged to. I stole the medical file from the office night-safe, took my baby, and ran."
"If you knew she was my daughter..." Daniel's voice shook with an impossible combination of rage, shock, and agony, "why did you come work in my house as a maid?! Why didn't you go to the police?! Why didn't you tell me?!"
"Because Doctor Vance told me that if I ever contacted you, he would use your power, your money, and your legal team to destroy me!" Maria wept. "He told me you were a cold, ruthless billionaire who didn't want a child from a dead woman! He said you paid him to get rid of the embryo discreetly so you wouldn't have to deal with the past!"

Daniel sank into his executive leather chair, dropping his head into his hands.
A cold, terrifying realization settled over him. For three years, he had lived as a hermit, burying himself in contracts, while his dead wife's living daughter was playing quietly on the kitchen floor forty feet away from him.
