Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Lake Geneva

The official DNA report arrived at 7:45 AM.
Probability of Paternity: 99.998%.
Probability of Maternity (Claire E. Whitfield): 99.999%.
Holding the paper in his hand, standing in his sunlit study, Daniel felt the final lingering doubts vanish. Sophia was his daughter. The child he and Claire had prayed for, cried for, and mourned had been living under his roof for an entire year.
Two hours later, a three-car motorcade pulled up to the gated entrance of an expansive, secluded estate on the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
Dr. Arthur Vance, sixty-two years old, sat on his sun porch sipping mimosa in a cashmere robe, reading the morning paper. His estate was quiet, surrounded by manicured lawns and private security cameras.
Suddenly, the front iron gates were smashed open as a heavy black SUV forced its way onto the driveway, followed closely by two state police cruisers with lights flashing.
Vance jumped up from his wicker chair, spilling his drink onto the tiles. "What in the world—"
Before his private security guard could even reach his holster, four uniformed Wisconsin State Troopers secured the porch, their weapons drawn.
"Arthur Vance!" an officer shouted. "Step away from the table and put your hands behind your head!"
Vance turned pale, stepping back toward the glass doors of his mansion. "This is private property! Do you know who I am?! I am the former Chair of Reproductive Medicine at—"
The heavy oak doors were pushed open, and Daniel Whitfield stepped onto the porch.
He wore a dark wool coat, his posture tall, imposing, and terrifyingly calm. Beside him walked Jonathan Hayes, holding a thick red legal binder.
Vance froze, his eyes widening in absolute horror as he recognized the man standing before him.
"Mr... Mr. Whitfield..." Vance stammered, his confident demeanor collapsing into a puddle of sweat. "What is the meaning of this intrusion? If this is about your late wife's estate records—"
"Shut up, Arthur," Daniel said. His voice was quiet, but it carried a lethal weight that made the older doctor step back until his hips hit the stone railing.
Daniel walked up to him until they were standing less than two feet apart.
"Three years ago, you told me my wife's embryo was destroyed in a nitrogen leak," Daniel said, his eyes drilling into Vance's soul. "You gave me a fake certificate. You watched me weep in your office, and then you sold my daughter to a surrogate broker in Chicago for two hundred thousand dollars."
"That's... that's a lie!" Vance squeaked, looking frantically at the police officers. "I don't know what you're talking about! I am a respected medical professional!"
Jonathan Hayes stepped forward, opening the red binder.
"Dr. Vance," Jonathan read off the documents, "thirty minutes ago, federal agents executed a search warrant on your private offshore banking accounts in the Cayman Islands. They uncovered three direct wire transfers from 'Alvarez Surrogacy Logistics' totaling six hundred thousand dollars. Furthermore, Ms. Maria Alvarez is currently in protective custody at the State Attorney General's office, providing a sworn affidavit detailing your extortion scheme."
Vance’s legs gave out. He slid down the stone pillar, collapsing onto his knees on the wicker rug, clutching his cashmere robe around his shaking frame.
"Daniel... please..." Vance whimpered, raising his trembling hands. "I was in debt... the clinic was losing money... I knew you were wealthy, I knew you wouldn't miss it... I thought the baby would go to a good home in Europe—"
Daniel leaned down, his face inches from the terrified doctor.
"You took my dead wife's legacy and turned it into a commodity," Daniel whispered, his tone so cold it seemed to freeze the morning air. "You forced my daughter's mother to live like a fugitive in the shadows for two years. You will spend every remaining day of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary."
Daniel stood up, turning his back on the weeping doctor.
"Take him away," Officer Ramirez ordered, pulling Vance up by his arms and slapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As the police led the disgraced doctor down the driveway toward the flashing lights, Daniel looked out over the quiet, blue waters of Lake Geneva. For the first time in three years, the suffocating weight in his chest felt lighter. The truth was out. The monster was in chains.
Now, he had to build a life for his daughter.
