News helicopters hovered high above the Whitfield estate, and dozens of reporters lined the iron gates along the perimeter road. Whitfield Enterprises stock fluctuated wildly on Wall Street as rumors circulated about Daniel's personal life and corporate leadership.
Inside the mansion, however, the chaos of the outside world felt miles away.
Daniel sat on the floor of the grand living room, surrounded by wooden building blocks. He wore a plain cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows.
Sophia sat across from him, determinedly trying to stack a bright red block on top of a shaky wooden tower.
"Careful, sweetie," Maria said, walking in carrying a tray of warm tea and cookies. She looked rested, her hair styled neatly, though she still moved with a quiet hesitation, as if she expected someone to wake her up from a dream.
Sophia placed the block. The tower wobbled, balanced for a second, and then collapsed across the rug with a clatter.
Sophia clapped her hands, laughing hysterically. "It fell! Daddy, it fell!"
Daniel smiled—a real, wide, brilliant smile that reached his eyes. He picked up one of the blocks and handed it back to her. "We’ll build it higher next time."
Maria set the tray down on the coffee table, watching the two of them. She felt a sudden pang of anxiety in her heart.
Now that the truth was out, now that Vance was in prison and Daniel had officially claimed Sophia, where did that leave her? She was not a Whitfield. She was the surrogate who had run away with his child.
Daniel noticed the shadow passing over Maria’s face. He stood up, leaving Sophia to play with the blocks, and walked over to the tea table.
"You're thinking about the custody papers, aren't you?" Daniel asked softly.
Maria lowered her eyes. "Jonathan was talking on the phone earlier... he mentioned 'formal adoption proceedings' and 'surrogate contract termination.' Daniel... I know she has your blood and Claire’s blood. But I am the only mother she has ever known. Please... don't send me away."
Daniel looked at her in genuine surprise. He reached out, gently taking her hand—a hand calloused from years of hard labor and scrubbing floors to keep a child fed.
"Maria," Daniel said, his voice deep and sincere. "Do you really think I am the kind of monster Vance told you I was?"
"No," she admitted softly. "Not anymore."
"You carried Sophia for nine months," Daniel said, looking into her eyes. "You protected her when I didn't even know she existed. You worked as a maid in my house just to keep her fed and close to safety. You are not going anywhere."
"What do you mean?" Maria asked, her breath catching.
"My legal team is drafting a joint parental agreement tomorrow," Daniel explained. "Legally, socially, and emotionally, Sophia will have two parents: me and you. This house is your home, Maria. You will never clean another floor, wash another dish, or worry about a bill for as long as you live."
Tears welled in Maria’s eyes, spilling over her cheeks, but this time, they were not tears of fear. They were tears of profound, overwhelming relief.
From the rug, little Sophia looked up at them, holding two wooden blocks in her hands.

"Mommy crying?" Sophia asked, scrambling to her feet and running over to wrap her little arms around Maria’s leg.
Maria sank to her knees, pulling the toddler close to her heart, looking up at Daniel through her tears. "No, sweetie. Mommy is just happy."
