Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm

By 11:00 PM that night, the Whitfield estate was lit up like a fortress.
A convoy of black sedans sat parked in the front driveway. Inside the grand dining room, where Daniel had not eaten a meal in over three years, sat a team of four top-tier corporate and criminal defense attorneys led by Jonathan Hayes—Daniel’s personal legal counsel and closest confidant.
On the table lay the contents of Maria’s blue folder, alongside DNA testing kits dispatched via emergency courier from a private medical laboratory in downtown Minneapolis.
"The DNA cheek swabs have already been dispatched to the lab under priority security clearance, Daniel," Jonathan said, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the birth records. "We will have the certified genetic match results by 8:00 AM tomorrow. But looking at these transfer codes from the fertility clinic... there is zero doubt. Sophia is genetically yours and Claire's."
Daniel sat at the head of the table, wearing a plain gray sweater, a mug of black coffee sitting untouched in front of him.
"What is Vance’s legal vulnerability?" Daniel asked, his tone cold and precise.
"It’s massive," Jonathan replied, leaning forward. "If what Ms. Alvarez claims is true—and the paper trail certainly supports it—Dr. Vance committed human trafficking, medical fraud, falsification of public records, and grand larceny involving biological material. He used his position at Crestview Health to run an unlisted surrogacy pipeline."
Maria sat on the far side of the table, dressed in a clean, soft wool sweater that Daniel’s assistant had brought her from a local boutique. She looked overwhelmed, her fingers nervously tracing the edge of her coffee saucer.
"Jonathan," Daniel said, leaning back in his chair. "I don't just want Vance arrested. I want his entire network dismantled. I want every doctor, broker, and administrator who touched that clinic put in handcuffs."
"It's going to create a massive media storm, Daniel," Jonathan warned gravely. "The moment we file the criminal complaint with the State Attorney General, the press will find out that the CEO of Whitfield Enterprises had a secret child through a stolen embryo. They will swarm this estate."
"Let them," Daniel said coldly. "My daughter isn't a secret. She is a Whitfield."
Just then, the heavy double doors of the dining room opened slightly.
A tiny figure dressed in oversized pink flannel pajamas crept through the gap. Sophia was rubbing her eyes with one small fist, carrying a worn plush bear by its ear. She completely ignored the four high-powered attorneys in tailored suits, navigating straight across the room toward Daniel’s chair.
"Daddy..." Sophia murmured sleepily, tugging on the hem of his sweater. "The rain is loud."
The four attorneys froze, staring at the little girl in stunned silence.
Daniel’s cold, stern expression vanished instantly. He reached down, lifted Sophia effortlessly into his arms, and set her onto his lap. She immediately curled against his chest, tucking her small face beneath his chin.
"It’s just rain, sweetheart," Daniel whispered softly, stroking her dark curls with his large hand. "You're safe here."
Jonathan looked at Daniel holding the child, a quiet, amazed smile touching the veteran lawyer's lips. He had known Daniel Whitfield for fifteen years. He had seen him build a multi-billion-dollar empire, and he had seen him crumble into a shell of a man after Claire’s death.
He had never seen Daniel look at anything the way he was looking at this little girl.

"I’ll file the emergency protective order against Vance at midnight, Daniel," Jonathan said quietly, closing his briefcase. "And I’ll have the State Police put a twenty-four-hour security detail on this property."
"Thank you, Jonathan," Daniel said, keeping his eyes on his sleeping daughter. "Tell the lab to hurry with those results."
