Chapter 1 - The Ghost of a Secret

The name on the birth certificate shimmered on my screen, blurred by the sudden moisture in my eyes. Thomas Harrison. My father. A man who had died twenty years ago, leaving behind a legacy of iron-fisted business deals and a cold, empty house that I had spent my entire adult life trying to fill with wealth.
I looked at the birth certificate again. It wasn't a fake. The embossed seal of the state was unmistakable, and the signature—that jagged, impatient scrawl—was burned into my memory from a thousand tax forms I had signed as his successor. The mother listed was Elena Whitmore.
I remembered the name. Elena had been a young, talented secretary in my father’s firm, a woman who had abruptly resigned when I was in college. My father had referred to it as a "personnel matter" and never mentioned her again. I had been twenty, arrogant, and too busy building my own empire to question the disappearance of a woman who had occasionally brought me cookies in the office.
Sophie is my daughter. She is your sister, Michael.
The world tilted. I was forty-two, a billionaire, and suddenly, I had a family—a dying sister and a five-year-old niece who had just hugged me on a street corner, unaware that the "nice man" who bought her shoes was the brother she had never been told about.
I didn't call my driver. I didn't go back to the office. I hit Call on the unknown number.
"Anna?" I whispered, my voice thick.
"She’s sleeping," a voice replied—thin, frail, but undeniably familiar. "She thinks I’m just resting because I’m tired, Michael. She doesn't know about the cancer. She doesn't know about the end."
"Where are you?" I demanded.

"St. Jude’s Hospice, room 402," she whispered. "Please, Michael... don't tell Sophie yet. She needs to believe the world is still kind."
I hung up and started running.
