Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

Even with all the protection, the past has a way of lingering. I found a box of my father’s private correspondence in the attic of the old family estate. It wasn't just bank records. There were letters—letters from Elena begging for help, letters from other women who had been discarded, evidence of a life built on the ruins of others.

I realized that my father hadn't just been a tough businessman; he had been a systematic destroyer of lives.

Sophie, now eight, found me reading the letters one night.

"Why are you sad, Michael?" she asked.

"I’m learning about history," I said. "And how not to repeat it."

"You’re a good man," she said, kissing my cheek. "Mommy said so."

Her words were the only thing that kept me sane as I systematically began to dismantle my father’s "legacy," using his money to pay back every person he had ever harmed.
