Chapter 3 - The Inheritance of Regret

The legal battle for custody was not going to be simple. Elena’s health was failing rapidly, and her extended family—a group of distant cousins who had never checked on her—suddenly appeared out of the woodwork like vultures when they heard there was a wealthy "benefactor" involved.

I brought in my best legal team, but I didn't fight with lawyers; I fought with the truth. I realized that my father’s estate was still legally tied up in trusts that required a blood descendant to oversee. If I revealed Sophie’s identity, I could protect her. If I kept it hidden, the vultures would swallow her whole.

I visited Sophie every day. I took her to parks, to the zoo, to toy stores where she didn't have to worry about the price tags. She was vibrant, funny, and possessed a wisdom that her mother had clearly nurtured. She never asked why I was always there, or why I brought such expensive gifts. She just accepted the love as if it were oxygen.

One evening, as we sat on a park bench, she looked at me and asked, "Are you going to be my daddy now?"

I stopped breathing. "I want to be your brother, Sophie. But I promise to be the man who takes care of you for the rest of your life."

May you like

"I like that," she said, leaning her head on my shoulder.

I looked at the sunset, realizing that for the first time in my life, I was building something that had real value.
