Chapter 1 - The Ash of an Empire

The quiet hum of the neo-natal ward was a stark contrast to the storm raging outside room 203. For the first time in fifteen years, Damon Vexley felt completely light—and utterly terrified. The weight of his twin newborns, a boy and a girl, was nothing compared to the overwhelming realization of how close he had come to losing them both.

Sylvie watched him from the hospital bed. Her eyes, shadowed with deep fatigue, tracked his every movement. She had expected anger. She had expected a bitter legal threat. She had not expected Damon—the ice-cold titan of Vexley Pharmaceuticals—to throw his satellite phone into a trash can and order his COO to draft a resignation letter.

"Damon," Sylvie said softly, her voice barely a thread in the sterile room. "You don't have to burn your life to the ground."

"My life wasn't built on anything real, Sylvie," Damon replied, sitting carefully on the edge of her bed, taking great care not to jostle the two tiny bundles in his arms. "I spent fifteen years building a fortress because I was terrified of being vulnerable. Look where it got us. It drove you away. It almost killed you."

Before Sylvie could answer, the door to Room 203 was thrown open.

Standing in the doorway was Julian Sterling, Damon’s chief legal counsel and a minority shareholder in Vexley Pharmaceuticals. Julian’s hair was slicked back with rain, his expensive suit rumpled, and his eyes wild with fury.

"Have you lost your mind, Damon?!" Julian practically yelled, stepping inside before noticing the babies and lowering his voice to an aggressive whisper. "The board is in absolute chaos. Marcus Vance from Vanguard Health heard you skipped the final signing. He's threatening to invoke the breach-of-contract clause and initiate a hostile takeover by morning!"

Damon didn't even look up from his daughter’s tiny face. "Then let him."

"Let him?!" Julian snapped, taking two strides toward the bed. "You own forty-two percent of the company! If Marcus Vance triggers the default clause, your shares will be frozen, the board will strip your voting rights, and you will be ousted without a single dollar of severance! You’re walking away from six billion dollars!"

"Julian," Damon said, his voice dropping into a tone so cold and low that even the veteran corporate lawyer stopped dead in his tracks. "If you step one foot closer to my wife and my children, I will destroy you before Marcus Vance even gets out of his limo."

Julian blinked, utterly stunned. "She’s your ex-wife, Damon. And those infants—"

"Are my son and daughter," Damon cut in smoothly. "Now get out of this room. If I see your face near this hospital again, I’ll ensure every legal board in New York investigates your off-shore trust accounts."

Julian’s face went white. He knew Damon didn't make empty threats. He backed out of the room slowly, his jaw tight with venom. "This isn't over, Damon. The board won't let you ruin them. Marcus Vance will take everything you own."

When the door clicked shut, the silence returned, heavier this time.

Sylvie looked at Damon, concern etching her features. "Julian is right about Marcus Vance. Marcus has hated you since the merger negotiations started. If he finds out you're vulnerable, he won't just take the company. He'll come after you personally. He'll use the media, the courts... he'll try to destroy our family before it even begins."

Damon looked at his son, whose small hand had curled around his pinky finger, and then at Sylvie.

"Let him try," Damon whispered. "I spent fifteen years fighting for money. Now I have something worth fighting for."
