Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over a renovated estate in upstate New York. The heavy iron security gates had been replaced with open stone arches and blooming white hydrangeas.

The corporate fallout had been swift and total. Arthur Montgomery, Marcus Vance, and Julian Sterling were all serving federal prison sentences for financial fraud, conspiracy, and corporate theft.

Through Evelyn Reed’s leadership at BioGlobe and Damon’s legal team, the pediatric cancer research patents were officially transferred into a charitable trust held exclusively in the names of Alexander and Clara Vexley. The drug had passed its final clinical trials with flying colors, saving hundreds of young lives in its first few months of distribution.

In the gardens behind the estate, Damon sat on a wide wooden bench, holding six-month-old Clara on his lap while she giggled, pulling at his linen shirt collar. A few feet away, Alexander was happily rolling on a thick blanket on the grass.

Sylvie walked out from the patio carrying two glasses of iced lemonade. She wore a simple white summer dress, her skin healthy and glowing, her eyes bright with a peace she hadn't known in years.

She sat next to Damon, handing him a glass and leaning her head against his shoulder.

"Evelyn called this morning," Sylvie said softly. "The board wanted to offer you the honorary Chairman position again."

Damon smiled, watching Clara play with his fingers. "What did you tell her?"

"I told her you were far too busy managing a much more difficult enterprise," Sylvie laughed lightly.

Damon turned his head, kissing Sylvie’s hair. "I offered to consult for two hours a week from home—on the condition that every single dollar of profits from the trial goes directly to children's hospitals."

"You really have changed, Damon Vexley," Sylvie whispered, looking up into his piercing gray eyes—the exact same eyes as their daughter's.

"I didn't change, Sylvie," Damon said softly, his voice full of warmth. "I just finally remembered who I was before I let the world convince me that money was the only way to be safe. You gave me my life back when you placed those two babies in my arms."

May you like

Sylvie smiled, tears of happiness brimming in her eyes as she reached out to hold his hand. "We built something real this time."

"Yes," Damon agreed. "Something no warzone can touch."
