Chapter 7 - The Final Confrontation

The realization hit Damon like a physical blow.
Everything—the bitter divorce push by Arthur, the corporate sabotage, the frantic custody battle—was never just about control or spite. It was about a thirty-year-old crime. Arthur Montgomery had stolen Damon's father's life work, and when Damon unknowingly recreated the formula decades later under Vexley Pharmaceuticals, Arthur realized his theft was about to be exposed to the entire world.
"Give me the binder, Julian," Damon said softly.
"Why should I?" Julian sneered, stepping back toward the stairs. "This is my leverage! The SEC is going to send me to prison unless I give them something bigger! This binder proves Arthur committed patent theft, grand larceny, and corporate espionage thirty years ago!"
Before Julian could take another step, a spotlight blinded the courtyard.
Engine roars cut through the night as three dark SUVs slammed through the front iron gates of the estate, tearing up the manicured lawn and sliding to a stop in the driveway.
Armed men in dark raincoats stepped out, led by none other than Arthur Montgomery himself. Arthur looked wild, his eyes bloodshot, his formal tie undone.
"Julian!" Arthur roared over the sound of the rain. "Hand over those files!"
Julian panicked, backing up against the porch pillar. "Arthur! You promised me safe passage out of the country!"
"You're a loose end, Julian!" Arthur snarled, pulling a small silver pistol from his coat pocket. "Just like Damon's father was!"
Sylvie screamed from inside the house.
Damon acted instantly. He slammed his body into Julian, pushing him behind a massive stone pillar as a gunshot echoed through the night, shattering the glass of the front doors.
Ray and the estate security team immediately opened fire with non-lethal deterrent rounds, creating a chaotic wall of sound and smoke in the driveway.
Damon grabbed the binder from Julian’s trembling hands, pulled Julian by his collar, and shoved him inside the front hall, slamming the heavy reinforced oak doors shut and locking the deadbolts.
"Sylvie! Get upstairs to the panic room now!" Damon yelled.
"Damon, no! I'm not leaving you!" Sylvie cried out, holding the twins in a travel carrier.
"Sylvie, listen to me!" Damon grabbed her shoulders, looking deep into her eyes. "Your father has lost his mind. He knows he's going to prison. Go upstairs with Alexander and Clara. Lock the door. I will handle this."
"Damon..."

"I love you," Damon said, the words coming out with fierce, absolute clarity. "I never stopped loving you. Now go!"
Sylvie choked back a sob, kissed him deeply, and ran up the grand staircase toward the secure upper floor.
