Chapter 3 - The Falling Masks

The word wife hung over the ballroom like a crack of thunder in a closed room.
The silence that followed was so complete that the distant hum of the grand hotel’s air conditioning sounded like a roar. Two hundred donors, foundation board members, city officials, and society columnists sat frozen in their seats, their champagne glasses suspended halfway to their lips, their eyes wide as they processed what Sebastian Vale had just said.
Celeste Rowan’s face lost every trace of color. The faint, triumphant smile that had lingered on her red lips collapsed into a look of absolute, unadulterated terror. Her hand, still holding the strip of ripped champagne-colored silk, began to tremble.
"Wife?" Celeste whispered, her voice cracking as she tried to find her breath. She looked past Sebastian toward Gavin Sterling, who was sitting at the head table as if he had been turned to stone. "Gavin... what is he talking about? You said... you told me she was just a senior volunteer! You said she was an administrative temp!"
Gavin Sterling did not answer. His face had gone from pale to an unsightly, mottled grey. His fingers gripped the edge of the mahogany head table so tightly that his knuckles turned blue.
Sebastian did not glance at Gavin. He did not look at the phones still held aloft by shocked donors. His tall, imposing frame stood between the crowd and Eve, shielding her completely within the broad cut of his bespoke tuxedo jacket. His hand rested lightly, protectively, against the small of her back.
"Gavin Sterling is a junior partner at Sterling & Sterling Asset Management," Sebastian said softly, his voice cutting through the silent room like a diamond edge through glass. "A firm whose primary institutional investor happens to be Vale Global Holdings. It seems Gavin’s ambition far exceeds his intelligence—and his memory."
Sebastian turned his head slightly, his sharp silver-grey eyes fixing directly onto Gavin.
"Three months ago, Gavin," Sebastian continued, his voice dropping an octave into a terrifying, quiet cadence, "you signed the non-disclosure agreements at the private reception in Aspen. You were introduced to my wife, Eve Mercer-Vale. You shook her hand. You congratulated us on our private ceremony in Switzerland."
Gasps rippled through the room.
Several prominent board members turned in their seats to stare at Gavin with open horror.
Gavin stumbled to his feet, knocking over his wine glass. Red Cabernet spilled across the pristine white linen cloth, dripping onto the carpet like fresh blood.
"Mr. Vale..." Gavin stammered, his voice rising in panic. "Sebastian... please. I—I didn't recognize her! She wasn't wearing her ring tonight! She was carrying trays! I swear to God, I had no idea Celeste would—"
"You knew," Eve spoke for the first time.
She stepped forward, just an inch, remaining beneath the warm, protective folds of Sebastian’s jacket. Her voice was not loud, but her training as an international program director meant she was accustomed to speaking clearly in crowded spaces. The room leaned in to catch every word.
"You knew who I was, Gavin," Eve said, her eyes calm and unwavering as she looked at the trembling man. "When I asked you an hour ago to speak with Celeste about her behavior toward the teenage volunteer at the door, you leaned in and whispered that if I didn't want to be treated like staff, I shouldn't act like staff. You told me that my husband's position wouldn't protect me if I made a scene in front of your prospective investors."
The donors shifted uncomfortably in their seats. The moral landscape of the room had inverted instantly. The "waitress" who had been treated as a target of casual public cruelty was suddenly revealed to be the most powerful woman in the room—the spouse of the man holding every financial lever in the city.
Celeste took a frantic step backward, her diamond heels catching slightly on the edge of her gown. "Sebastian... please, it was a mistake! She was insolent to me! She didn't display the proper respect for the donors—"
"The proper respect?" Sebastian’s tone was terrifyingly flat. "My wife founded this charity seven years ago. She built the mobile medical transport units that operate in three underfunded districts in this city. She does not wear a name badge because she does not seek the public adulation that women like you crave. She volunteered tonight because two catering staff members called in sick, and she refused to let the service fall behind on an evening meant to raise money for sick children."
Sebastian stepped closer to Celeste. Though he did not raise a hand or a voice, Celeste flinched as if she had been struck.
"You tore her clothes," Sebastian whispered. "You humiliated her in front of two hundred people for the crime of serving water with humility."
"I... I can pay for the dress!" Celeste cried out, tears of humiliation finally bursting through her heavy mascara. She held up her hands in a desperate pleading gesture. "I’ll write a check! I’ll donate fifty thousand dollars to the foundation right now! Please, Sebastian, my father is on the board of your harbor development project—"
"Your father’s seat on the harbor board was revoked thirty seconds ago," Sebastian said coldly. He pulled his smartphone from his trousers pocket, tapped the screen once, and placed it back. "And as of this moment, every line of credit extended to Sterling & Sterling by Vale Global is suspended pending an immediate, comprehensive forensic audit."
Gavin let out a choked sound, sinking back into his chair as if his spine had been removed.
Sebastian turned his back on them entirely, dismissing them as though they were no longer alive. He looked down at Eve, his expression softening instantly into a look of deep, tender concern.
"Let's go home, sweetheart," he said softly.
Eve nodded, holding his jacket securely around her ruined dress.
As Sebastian guided her toward the private executive exit behind the stage, he stopped near the head catering manager, who was standing frozen beside the kitchen doors.
"Marcus," Sebastian said to the manager.
"Y-yes, Mr. Vale?" the man squeaked.

"Ensure the media staff hands over every piece of video footage recorded in this room tonight to my legal team within thirty minutes," Sebastian ordered calmly. "And if anyone attempts to delete a single frame... ensure their name is added to the lawsuit."
Without waiting for a response, Sebastian pushed open the heavy brass doors, leading his wife out of the snake pit and into the cool, dark air of the private garage below.
