Chapter 9 - The Charity Ball

One year after the night that changed their lives forever, the annual Mercer-Vale Foundation Gala was held once again.

This time, however, the event took place not in a gilded hotel ballroom, but inside the spacious, beautifully decorated grand hall of the new Health Center itself.

There were no golden velvet ropes separating the wealthy donors from the volunteers. The seating was open, the caterers were treated like honored guests, and at every table, prominent city leaders sat shoulder-to-shoulder with community nurses, ambulance drivers, and local volunteers.

Eve walked through the room wearing a breathtaking, emerald-green gown designed by a local sustainable fashion house. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, and on her hand, the brilliant diamond of her marriage ring caught the light of the simple, elegant lanterns hanging from the ceiling.

Beside her, Sebastian walked proudly, wearing a dark tuxedo, his attention never wavering from his wife.

As they reached the central stage, the room fell into an appreciative, warm silence.

Eve stepped up to the microphone.

"Welcome, everyone," Eve spoke, her voice filling the room with confidence and grace. "One year ago, many of you were in a very different room. You watched a moment of cruelty that could have broken this foundation. But instead, because of the incredible generosity of people from all walks of life, that moment became the foundation of everything you see around you tonight."

She turned her head slightly, pointing toward the side of the stage where the clinic staff stood.

"Tonight, we aren't here to celebrate status," Eve continued. "We are here to celebrate service. And I am proud to announce that our mobile units have officially served over one hundred thousand patients this year—completely free of charge."

The room exploded into thunderous applause.

In the back row, standing among the logistics crew, Celeste Rowan clapped softly, a bright, genuine smile on her face. Beside her stood her father, Arthur, who had quietly stepped down from his corporate boards to focus on local philanthropic work. He reached out, patting his daughter's shoulder with deep pride.

When the speeches concluded, the music began to play—a lively, joyful melody that invited everyone onto the dance floor.

Sebastian took Eve’s hand, leading her out into the center of the hall.

As he pulled her into his arms, swirling her gracefully under the warm lights, he looked down into her face with an expression of pure, enduring love.

"You changed this city, Eve," he whispered softly into her ear.

"We changed it," she corrected softly, pressing her cheek against his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart. "Together."
