Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Six months later.

The summer sun beamed down on the newly opened Mercer-Vale Community Health Center in the heart of the city’s east district.

The grand, modern facility—funded almost entirely by the massive wave of public donations that had poured in following the gala scandal—was bustling with activity. Brightly colored mobile health vans were parked in the courtyard, loading supplies for their afternoon routes.

Near the loading dock, a young woman in light blue medical scrubs was lifting heavy cardboard boxes of sterile bandages off a wooden pallet. Her hair was pulled back into a simple ponytail, sweat glistening on her forehead, her hands calloused from hard work.

It was Celeste Rowan.

She had spent the last four months working six days a week at the clinic under the strict supervision of the chief administrator. She received no special treatment, no luxury accommodations, and no media passes.

A large delivery truck pulled up to the bay. The driver jumped out, holding a clipboard.

"Hey, Rowan!" the driver called out. "Need a hand with those crates?"

"I’ve got it, Tim!" Celeste called back, wiping her forehead with the back of her sleeve and lifting another box with a confident, practiced strength she had never possessed before. "Just sign the manifest and I’ll handle the inventory!"

From the second-floor balcony overlooking the courtyard, Eve stood leaning against the railing, holding a cup of coffee.

Sebastian stepped out from the glass doors behind her, slipping his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest.

"How is our most famous volunteer doing?" Sebastian asked smoothly, looking down at Celeste.

"She hasn't missed a single morning," Eve replied, resting her head against his shoulder. "She was ten minutes late last month because her bus broke down, and she stayed two hours late to make up for it. The head nurse told me yesterday that Celeste is actually the most efficient logistics worker they have."

"People can change," Sebastian mused, "if they are forced to confront the reality of their own actions."

"And Gavin Sterling?" Eve asked.

Sebastian scoffed softly. "Gavin left the country three months ago. He’s working as an entry-level financial analyst in Singapore. His days of hosting gala tables are officially over."

Eve turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck. "And what about you, Mr. Vale? Are your days of tearing down corporate empires over?"

"Never," Sebastian smiled, his silver eyes locking onto hers with deep warmth. "Unless my wife asks me to stop."

"I would never ask you to stop being you," Eve whispered, raising her chin to kiss him softly on the lips. "Just promise me one thing."

"Anything."

"Next time we go to a gala... we leave early."

Sebastian laughed, a deep, rich sound that echoed off the glass balcony walls, pulling her closer into his embrace as the sun shone brightly over the house that love and truth had built.
