Chapter 1 - The Loop Confrontation

Sebastian Harlow did not usually look up from his desk when someone entered without an appointment. His office on the fiftieth floor overlooked the grey expanse of Lake Michigan, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass that seemed to hold back the frost by sheer force of will. But the edge in his assistant’s voice—a mix of fear and professional panic—made him pause his pen mid-signature.

Rosa stood just inside the heavy mahogany door, her blue cleaning tunic contrasting starkly with the minimalist Italian leather and marble of the executive suite. She held her cracked phone in one hand, her knuckles white.

"You have five seconds before security escorts you down to the lobby," Sebastian said, his tone low, measured, and dangerously calm.

"Your penthouse on Michigan Avenue," Rosa said, her voice trembling slightly before finding its footing. "Every room. Seven cameras. High-definition, wireless transmitters disguised in the fixtures. One of them is mounted directly above the headboard in the master suite."

Sebastian’s eyes narrowed into slits. He did not laugh, nor did he scoff. A man who managed billions in urban real estate understood the calculus of threat immediately. "Show me."

Rosa stepped forward, placing her phone on his wide glass desk. She swiped through the photos: the chrome exhaust vent, the subtle gap behind the hand-carved mahogany bedframe, the tiny pinhole lens tucked inside the smoke detector. As Sebastian scrolled, the blood visibly drained from his face, replaced by a cold, predatory focus.

"These aren't off-the-shelf security gadgets," Sebastian murmured, his thumb tracing the screen. "These are military-grade micro-optics." He looked up, meeting Rosa's eyes with terrifying intensity. "Who else have you told about this?"

"Nobody," Rosa replied firmly. "I finished my shift, locked the doors, and came straight here."

Sebastian stood up, buttoning his tailored jacket in one fluid motion. "Cancel my afternoon meetings," he ordered his assistant, who was still hovering near the door. Then he turned back to Rosa. "Get your coat, Miss Martinez. You and I are going to have a very quiet, very thorough conversation with my security team—and then we are going to find out who thinks they can turn my personal life into a broadcast."
