Chapter 10 - The Truth Wins

The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the entire Beverly Hills estate. The music was playing softly, and the laughter of children echoed through the air.
I walked over to the edge of the property, looking out over the city lights of Los Angeles beginning to twinkle in the twilight.
Julian was currently serving a ten-year sentence in a minimum-security federal facility, finally learning the true meaning of accountability. My mother was living quietly in her valley apartment, completely cut off from the high society circles she had once valued more than her own children. The Vance family name had been cleansed of its rot, replaced by a legacy of corporate transparency and social responsibility.
"Hey."
I looked down. Camila was standing beside me, wearing a brand-new, clean school uniform, her braids perfectly neat this time. She was holding a small piece of chocolate cake on a paper plate.
"Here," she said, handing me the plate. "My mom said you like chocolate."
"Thank you, Camila," I said, taking the cake with a smile. "How is school going?"
"Great! I got an A on my history project," she said proudly. Then she paused, looking up at me with her sharp, intelligent eyes. "I wanted to ask you something."
"Anything, Camila."
"Are you glad I stopped you in the hallway that day? My mom was really scared I’d get her fired."
I knelt down on the grass, looking directly into the eyes of the little girl who had changed my entire universe with a single question.
"Camila, that was the most important moment of my entire life," I said, my voice filled with emotion. "You had the courage to speak up when everyone else was silent. You reminded me of who I wanted to be. You didn't just save your mom that day; you saved me."
Camila smiled, a beautiful, brilliant smile that cut through the twilight. She reached forward and gave me a quick, warm hug before running back toward the lawn to play with the other children.
I stood up, holding the plate, watching her run into the golden light.

Six months ago, I had walked through my marble halls, a lonely billionaire trapped inside a fortress of contracts, numbers, and deadlines. Today, I was surrounded by light, by life, and by a community of people who knew that in this house, the truth would always win.
I took a deep breath of the cool evening air, turned around, and walked back into the warmth of my home.
