Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Penthouse

The penthouse elevator opened directly into Julian’s luxury apartment in Century City. The space was a monument to unearned wealth—expensive modern art, Italian leather furniture, and panoramic views of the Los Angeles skyline, all funded by my hard work and our family's legacy.

Julian was sitting at his wet bar, a half-empty bottle of bourbon in front of him. When he saw me step out of the elevator accompanied by Marcus Thorne and two corporate security guards, his glass froze halfway to his mouth.

"Vance," Julian said, trying to force a casual, confident chuckle that failed miserably. "To what do I owe the honor? It’s a bit early for a family reunion, don't you think?"

I walked over to the bar, grabbed his glass of bourbon, and poured it slowly into the sink. "The game is over, Julian."

Julian’s face darkened, the fake charm evaporating instantly. "I assume Harrison called you. That sniveling coward couldn't hold his liquor, let alone a secret."

"You stole nearly four million dollars from my estate," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You forced an innocent woman to beg her landlord for mercy while you lived like a king in a penthouse I pay for. How could you fall this low, Julian? She is a human being. She has a child."

"Oh, please! Don't give me the moral lecture, big brother!" Julian shouted, slamming his fist on the bar as he stood up. "You have everything! You have the CEO title, the respect of the world, the multi-billion-dollar legacy! What do I get? A monthly allowance like a child! I needed that money to survive. The people I owed in Vegas... they don't just file lawsuits, Vance. They break legs. They kill."

"Then you should have come to me like a man," I shouted back, my restraint finally snapping. "Instead, you acted like a thief in the night! You targeted a defenseless housekeeper because you knew she didn't have the power to fight back!"

"I don't care about your staff!" Julian spat. "And you can't touch me, Vance. If you take this to the police, the Vance Global stock will plummet. The board of directors will dump you the second they find out your own brother was laundering money through your personal estate. You love your company too much to ruin your reputation over a maid."

I looked at my brother, feeling nothing but a profound sense of pity. He truly believed that money and reputation were the only things that mattered in this world. He didn't understand that honor was worth far more than a stock price.

"You're wrong, Julian," I said softly, stepping back. "Marcus, show him."

Marcus pulled out a tablet and displayed a live federal filing document. "Mr. Vance has already self-reported the internal fraud to the SEC and the forensic division of the LAPD this morning. The company has already issued a public statement isolating your fraudulent actions from the corporate entity. The stock dipped two percent at the opening bell, but it's already recovering because the market respects transparency."

Julian’s eyes widened in horror as he stared at the document. "You... you actually ruined me? Over her?"

May you like

"No, Julian," I said, turning my back on him. "I ruined you over the truth. Detective Ramirez, he’s all yours."

From the elevator lobby, three LAPD detectives stepped forward, handcuffs drawn. Julian began screaming obscenities as they grabbed his arms, forcing him to the floor. I didn't look back as the elevator doors closed.
