Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in Pasadena

The Vance family estate in Pasadena was an architectural masterpiece of classical European design, surrounded by towering oak trees and pristine rose gardens. It was a place built on old money and older secrets.

I didn't knock. I used my personal key to open the massive iron-reinforced front doors, walking into the grand sitting room where my mother, Evelyn Vance, was sipping tea while reading an art auction catalog. She looked up, her expression a perfect mask of elegant, aristocratic poise.

"Vance, darling," she said, her voice dripping with smooth, maternal affection. "You should have called. I would have had the kitchen prepare something for you. I heard about the terrible situation with Julian. It’s a tragedy, truly. The boy always had a weak disposition."

I walked over to her, pulled out the printed email threads, and dropped them directly onto her crystal tea set, shattering a delicate porcelain saucer.

"Stop the act, Mother," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I know everything."

Evelyn looked down at the papers, her eyes narrowing as she recognized her own words. The warm, maternal facade vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, calculating coldness that made her look like a completely different person.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Vance," she said softly, setting her teacup down on the table. "You think you’re a saint? I did what was necessary to protect this family. If Julian’s debts had become public, the scandals would have destroyed your father's legacy, my charity work, and the family name."

"So you stole from a single mother?" I yelled, my anger finally breaking through. "You used her vulnerability, her fear of losing her job, to blackmail her into silence while you and Julian lived in absolute luxury? That isn't protecting the family, Mother. That is predatory behavior. It is criminal."

"She is a maid, Vance!" Evelyn hissed, standing up to confront me. "A housekeeper! We paid her a generous wage for years. A few months of delayed payments is nothing compared to the survival of our family reputation! You are destroying everything your father built over a meaningless domestic dispute!"

"Rosa Martinez is worth ten of you," I said, stepping closer to her, my eyes drilling into hers. "She has honor. Her daughter has courage. You have nothing but a hollow house built on lies."

"What are you going to do?" she sneered, crossing her arms. "Put your own mother in a jail cell next to your brother? You wouldn't dare. The public embarrassment would crush Vance Global."

"I don't care about the company anymore, Mother," I said calmly. "And I don't need to put you in a jail cell. I’m going to do something much worse to you."
