Chapter 4 - The Ransom of Fire

The room exploded into chaos.
Dominic went low, his weapon firing twice before the guard in the hallway could even register the breach. Both rounds caught the man in the chest, dropping him instantly into the dust.
Behind him, Marco and the Salvatore enforcers poured into the building, clearing the lower rooms with lethal, military precision. The air became thick with the scent of cordite, copper, and drywall dust.
Dominic charged up the narrow wooden stairs, his heart hammering against his ribs. He kicked the door to the upper office open.
Victor Moretti stood in the center of the room, his hand wrapped tightly in the hair of a young woman who was bound to a wooden chair. Elena Winters. Her face was bruised, her lip split and bleeding, but her eyes—those fierce, stubborn blue eyes—were wide with defiance.
Victor had his pistol pressed to her temple.
"Step back, Salvatore!" Victor screamed, his face slick with sweat, his eyes wild. "I swear to God, I’ll paint this wall with her!"
Dominic stopped. He lowered his gun slightly, his eyes tracking the tension in Victor’s finger on the trigger. One twitch, and the girl was gone.
"You're a long way from home, Victor," Dominic said, his voice deadly calm, a contrast to the panic in the room. "And you're playing a game you aren't built for."
"I’m playing the game I have to!" Victor yelled. "You think you own this city? You think you can just squeeze us out of the docks and we'll sit back and starve? We have the ledger, Dominic! We have the names of every judge, every cop, and every politician you’ve paid off for the last ten years!"
Dominic didn't flinch. "If you had the ledger, you wouldn't be beating on a nurse in a frozen rail yard. You don't have it. Frankie died before he could tell you where he hid it, didn't he?"
Victor’s grip tightened on Elena’s hair. She let out a soft cry of pain, but she kept her eyes on Dominic, a strange, desperate hope flaring in them.
"She knows where it is!" Victor snarled. "Frankie told her!"
"I don't know anything!" Elena choked out, her voice raw. "I told you, he just asked me to tell his mother he was sorry!"
"Shut up!" Victor shook her. He glared back at Dominic. "Here's how this goes, Salvatore. You hand over the docks. You pull your men out of the south side entirely, and you give me ten million in cash to clear my offshore debts. You do that, and the nurse lives. If not... she dies, and I release the ledger details to the feds anyway."
Dominic took a slow, deliberate step forward.
"You made a mistake, Victor," Dominic whispered.
"I have the gun to her head!" Victor screamed.
"And I have the man who sold you out," Dominic said.
From the hallway behind Dominic, Marco dragged a bleeding, trembling man into the light of the room. It was Silvio, one of Dominic’s own trusted captains.
"He told you we were coming, didn't he?" Dominic said, not looking back at Silvio. "He’s the one who suggested you take the girl to draw me out. He wanted the docks for himself."
Silvio looked up at Dominic, tears mixing with the blood on his face. "Dominic, please... they were going to kill my family..."
"You sold your family the moment you touched mine," Dominic said. Without looking, he raised his gun and fired once. Silvio slumped to the floor, dead.

Victor froze, the utter ruthlessness of the act paralyzing him for a crucial fraction of a second.
In that silence, Elena swung her head back, slamming her skull into Victor’s nose.
