Chapter 6 - Into the Lion’s Den

The drive back to the penthouse was silent.
Elena sat in the front passenger seat, wrapped in a thick wool blanket Marco had provided. She watched the city pass by, her eyes reflecting the orange glow of distant fires. The Salvatore empire was indeed burning. Columns of black smoke rose from the industrial districts, painting the snowy sky in shades of ash and flame.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked softly, not looking at him. "You don't know me. You don't know Sofie. You could have just given them what they wanted."
Dominic kept his eyes on the road, his hands steady on the steering wheel.
"My sister was eight years old when she died," he said, his voice flat. "I had all the money in the world, and I couldn't do a damn thing to save her. I watched her fade away in a sterile room, waiting for a miracle that never came. Tonight, your sister stood in the snow, waiting for someone to keep a promise. I wasn't going to let her down."
Elena turned her head, studying his profile. The harsh, scarred lines of his face seemed softer in the dim light of the dashboard.
"You're not the monster they say you are," she said.
"I am exactly the monster they say I am, Elena," Dominic replied. "But even monsters have families."
When they arrived at the penthouse, the elevator doors opened to reveal Sofie standing in the hallway, holding her ragged teddy bear. The moment her eyes landed on Elena, she let out a piercing cry and sprinted forward.
"Elena!"
"Sofie!"
Elena dropped to her knees, catching her sister in a tight, desperate embrace. They clung to each other, sobbing in the quiet luxury of the penthouse, their world finally aligning after thirty-six hours of pure terror.
Dominic watched them, a strange, unfamiliar warmth spreading through his chest. He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see Marco.
"The Morettis have taken over the shipping docks," Marco said quietly. "The police are turning a blind eye. If we don't fight back tonight, we lose everything, Dominic. The family... the legacy. Everything your father built."
Dominic looked back at Elena and Sofie. Sofie was looking up at her sister, pointing to the grilled cheese sandwich Mrs. Gable had made for her, her face shining with pure, untainted joy.
"Let them have the docks," Dominic said.

Marco stared at him, shocked. "Dominic..."
"The docks are just concrete, Marco," Dominic said, his voice firm. "We have the cloud key. We have the names of their political allies. We don't need to fight them with guns. We’re going to dismantle them from the inside out."
