Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Board

At 7:00 AM the following morning, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a cold, biting autumn mist that hung low over the manicured lawns of Greenwich.

My estate was now an impenetrable fortress. Twelve heavily armed private security contractors from Vanguard Security—a firm I owned outright—patrolled the stone walls, equipped with thermal imaging drones and automated perimeter sensors. Inside, Mrs. Harris had transformed the master guest suite into a pristine, sunlit nursery equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring systems.

Lily had been bathed, dressed in soft new clothes brought by a personal shopper I had dispatched at dawn, and was currently sitting at the long mahogany dining table eating a massive plate of blueberry pancakes. She looked like a completely different child—her dark hair washed and brushed, her face glowing with color, though her eyes still checked the doorway every time a footstep echoed down the corridor.

I walked into the dining room dressed in a tailored navy suit, adjusting my cuff links.

"Good morning, Lily," I said, taking a seat at the head of the table.

"Good morning, Mr. Nathan," she said quietly, setting down her fork. "How is Noah?"

"Noah is sleeping like a champ," I smiled. "Mrs. Harris is sitting right beside his crib. And I have some good news for you."

Lily’s face lit up instantly. "About Grandma Rose?"

"I spoke directly to the Chief of Cardiology at St. Jude’s twenty minutes ago," I said, leaning forward. "Your grandmother was moved to the private cardiac suite last night. She regained consciousness an hour ago, her blood pressure is stabilizing, and the doctors are prepping her for a procedure that will help her heart beat properly again. She knows you're safe here, Lily."

Lily’s eyes welled with tears, but this time they were tears of pure joy. She dropped her fork and wiped her eyes with the napkin. "Can I see her?"

"As soon as the doctors finish her morning checks," I promised. "My driver, Thomas, will take you and Ms. Miller to the hospital in an armored sedan. You can stay with her as long as you like."

Before she could answer, my heavy oak office doors clicked open, and Arthur Pendelton stepped inside. My chief legal counsel looked as though he hadn't slept a single minute in forty-eight hours. His silk tie was slightly crooked, his eyes bloodshot behind his gold-rimmed glasses, and he was carrying a leather briefcase packed with court motions.

"Nathan," Arthur said, nodding toward Lily before gesturing for me to join him in the study.

I stood up, patted Lily gently on the shoulder, and followed Arthur into the soundproofed room, pulling the door shut behind us.

"Give it to me straight, Arthur," I said, stepping behind my glass desk.

Arthur snapped his briefcase open and laid three thick legal folders across the surface. "Julian Sterling has formally filed a petition in the Southern District Court of New York. He is alleging that you have engaged in an illegal, unrecorded surrogate transaction involving an undisclosed heir, violating both federal SEC disclosure laws for public CEOs and the governing bylaws of the Carter Family Trust."

"On what grounds?" I scoffed. "Noah is my biological child. The trust explicitly states that the primary founder's voting shares pass directly to the eldest living biological descendant upon the founder's death or total incapacitation."

"That's the trap, Nathan," Arthur said, leaning heavily against the desk. "Julian isn't trying to prove Noah isn't your son. He's trying to prove that you stole the child from an illegal breeding facility run by Apex, which would trigger a felony indictment. If you are indicted on federal child-trafficking charges—even false ones—the board is legally required under Article 9 of your corporate charter to temporarily suspend your voting power and appoint the Vice Chairman as acting CEO."

"And the Vice Chairman is Julian Sterling," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

"Precisely," Arthur agreed grimly. "He’s backed you into a lethal corner. If you claim Noah as your son, you face his manufactured criminal investigation regarding the surrogate's origin. If you deny Noah is your son, Julian uses his position as Vice Chairman to claim the infant is an abandoned ward of the state, revokes your temporary custody, and sends Noah to an out-of-state facility under his control where he can 'disappear' forever."

I walked over to the tall windows, staring out at the mist rolling off the lawn. The brilliance of Julian's trap was terrifying. He had spent six years setting this net, buying Apex, forging my destruction release, securing a surrogate in total secrecy, and waiting for the exact moment when my corporate contract came up for its ten-year renewal.

"Where is Clara Vance?" I asked suddenly, turning back to Arthur.

Arthur froze. "Clara? The geneticist who wrote that letter?"

"She’s the only person who can prove the surrogacy wasn't an illegal trafficking operation," I said, my mind putting the pieces together at light speed. "She was the head of the lab twelve years ago. She’s the one who hid Noah from Julian for two years after he was born. If she wrote that note and left it under Noah's blanket, she’s alive, and she’s running."

"Nathan," Arthur warned, shaking his head. "Clara Vance has been a ghost for eight years. Her bank accounts were closed, her home in Westchester was sold, and her academic credentials were scrubbed from the state database. Searching for her right now is like hunting for a needle in a hurricane."

"Then we create a hurricane," I replied coldly. "Julian thinks he controls the narrative because he controls the SEC filings and the local news stations. But he doesn't control Apex's physical servers."

Arthur frowned. "Apex's servers are housed in a subterranean vault in Stamford. They have military-grade cyber protection."

"They have military-grade cyber protection built by my company," I reminded him with a grim smile. "Carter Global Logistics designed and installed Apex's biometric security architecture eight years ago. I still hold the master administrative override key in my private vault."

Arthur’s eyes widened in sheer shock. "Nathan... accessing those servers without a federal subpoena is a felony breach of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. If Julian’s security team catches you tapping into their network..."

"Julian tried to throw my infant son into a drainage ditch to drown in the rain," I said, stepping toward the door, my expression turning into pure granite. "He’s about to learn what happens when you try to destroy a Carter."
