Chapter 4 - The Infiltration of Apex

At 11:30 PM, the night sky over Stamford was dark, heavy, and silent.
A light drizzle slicked the black asphalt of the industrial park where Apex Fertility Institute sat like a fortress of white concrete and dark glass. Surrounded by a twelve-foot wrought-iron fence and monitored by high-definition pan-tilt cameras, the facility appeared completely asleep to the outside world.
Four hundred yards away, tucked beneath the shadow of an overgrown pine grove, sat an unmarked black command van.
Inside, screens glowed with blue diagnostic lines and real-time infrared feeds. I sat in the command chair, wearing a dark tactical jacket, accompanied by Marcus Vance (no relation to Clara), my head of private security and a former Special Forces communications officer.
"Perimeter cameras three and seven are looped," Marcus reported, his fingers flying across a customized military deck. "We have a four-minute blind window before the master server in Chicago performs its automated ping check. If you aren't inside the server room by then, the alarm triggers automatically."
"Four minutes is plenty," I said, checking my encrypted drive. "What about the physical guards inside?"
"Two security officers on the main floor," Marcus replied, pointing to two red thermal dots on the floor plan display. "They're currently taking a coffee break in the eastern lounge. The subterranean elevator shaft requires a dual biometric key. That’s where your master administrative override comes in."
I looked down at the silver keycard encased in my leather wallet—a card I had kept in my safe for eight years, never suspecting it would one day save my family.
"I'm going in," I said, opening the van's side door. "Keep the engine running."
I moved through the shadows of the pine grove like a ghost, crossing the wet asphalt with swift, silent strides. I reached the side entrance of Apex—a heavy reinforced steel door designed to withstand forced entry.
I swiped the master administrative keycard across the reader.
The reader blinked red twice, then turned a solid, glowing emerald green. A soft pneumatic hiss echoed in the quiet night as the heavy lock disengaged.
I slipped inside, closing the door behind me.
The air inside Apex was ice-cold, smelling strongly of industrial disinfectant and liquid nitrogen. High-voltage conduits hummed softly within the walls. I moved down the sterile white corridor, avoiding the overhead motion sensors, until I reached the heavy stainless-steel door of the primary vault elevator.
I pressed the keycard against the reader, followed by my thumbprint against the glass scanner.
ACCESS GRANTED: WELCOME, EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATOR CARTER.
The elevator doors glided open silently. I stepped inside and pressed the button for Sub-Level 3—the location of the dark data vault where Apex stored its master genetic registries, surrogacy contracts, and private client correspondence.
The elevator descended rapidly, the air growing colder with every floor. When the doors opened, I was greeted by a massive room filled with rows of towering black server racks, their cooling fans creating a low, deafening roar.
I pulled out my encrypted portable drive, walked directly to Rack 01-Alpha—the core archive—and plugged the cable into the primary diagnostic port.
"Marcus," I whispered into my radio headset. "I'm plugged in. Start the local mirror pull."
"Copy that, boss," Marcus’s voice crackled through my earpiece. "Data transfer initiated. Transferring all records tagged under project 'Carter-Twelve' and files associated with Dr. Clara Vance."
Progress bars began flashing across my handheld screen:
DOWNLOAD IN PROGRESS: 12%... 28%... 45%...
Suddenly, a loud red warning banner flashed across my handheld screen:
SECURITY ALERT: EXTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED FROM REMOTE TERMINAL (IP: STERLING-HOLDINGS-NY).
My heart leaped into my throat. Someone else was currently logged into the server from Julian Sterling's private estate in Manhattan, actively attempting to wipe the exact files I was downloading!
"Marcus!" I hissed into the mic. "They’re executing a remote purge script! They know someone is accessing the Carter files!"
"I see it!" Marcus shouted back over the radio. "They're overwriting the surrogacy logs! You have less than thirty seconds before the drive wipes itself clean!"
"Bypass their override!" I growled, pressing my thumb violently against the manual override command on my screen. "Lock the partition!"
DOWNLOAD IN PROGRESS: 78%... 89%... 98%... COMPLETE.
PARTITION LOCKED.
I slammed the drive key out of the port and shoved it into my pocket just as the entire server rack went dark. Every cooling fan in the room cut out simultaneously, leaving the subterranean vault in terrifying, pitch-black silence.
Then, the emergency red lights flashed to life, bathed in a deep, blood-red glow, accompanied by a deafening klaxon horn.
WARNING: SECURITY BREACH DETECTED ON SUB-LEVEL 3. AUTOMATIC LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
Heavy steel fire doors began slamming shut down the main corridor, blocking the elevator access.
"Nathan!" Marcus yelled through the comms. "The main elevator is disabled! Security guards are taking the stairwell down! You have ten seconds before they pin you in the vault!"
I didn't waste a breath. I sprinted toward the rear utility exit—a narrow service shaft used for liquid nitrogen line maintenance. I threw my weight against the emergency bar, burst through the door, and began hauling myself up the steel rung ladder in total darkness.
Behind me, I heard the main vault doors crash open, followed by the heavy boots of armed guards entering the server hall.
"He was just here!" a voice shouted from below. "Check the service shafts! Sterling said no one leaves this building alive!"
I climbed faster, my hands slick with sweat, my teeth gritted against the exhaustion tearing through my arms. I reached the top of the maintenance shaft, kicked open the exterior ventilation grate, and rolled out onto the wet gravel of the roof just as two security guards burst onto the lower platform behind me.
I sprinted across the roof, leapt across a four-foot gap onto the adjacent storage building, and slid down the fire escape into the dark alley below.
Marcus tore down the alley in the black command van, slamming the side door open while the tires screeched against the wet pavement.
"GET IN!" Marcus screamed.
I threw myself into the back of the van, landing flat on my back as Marcus slammed his foot onto the accelerator, launching the vehicle out into the rain-slicked avenue just as two Apex security cars turned the corner, their high beams cutting through the dark.
I sat up, breathing heavily, pulling the small silver drive from my pocket.
"Did we get it?" Marcus asked, watching the rear-view mirror as we lost the pursuers in the midnight traffic.
I plugged the drive into the van’s diagnostic laptop.
A single folder popped up on the screen, containing three encrypted PDF documents and a twenty-second audio file recorded six days ago.
I clicked play on the audio file.
A weak, trembling female voice echoed through the van's speakers—a voice I recognized instantly despite twelve years of silence.
"Nathan... if you have this file, it means Julian’s men have breached the safehouse in Vermont. He forced me to sign the fake surrogacy transfer papers under threat of death. But Noah is innocent, Nathan. I hid the original genetic chain-of-custody contract inside the old Carter family chapel in Greenwich... behind the stained-glass window of St. Jude. Find it before the court hearing on Friday. It’s the only thing that can destroy Julian forever..."
The recording cut off with the sound of a shattering glass door and a sudden, violent scream.
I stared at the glowing screen, my knuckles turning white.
Julian hadn't just forged the documents. He had hunted Clara Vance down, captured her, and was holding her hostage to ensure she couldn't testify at the court hearing three days from now.
"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. "Redirect our route."

"Where to, boss?"
"We're going to the Carter chapel," I replied. "And then we're going to rescue Clara Vance."
