Chapter 5 - The Stained-Glass Secret

The private chapel on the western edge of the Carter estate had been built by my grandfather in 1952. It was a gothic stone structure covered in thick, dark ivy, standing quiet and abandoned among the rolling hills of the property, rarely visited since my mother’s funeral fifteen years ago.

It was 2:00 AM when Marcus and I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the chapel.

The interior smelled of old cedar, damp stone, and ancient candle wax. Moonshine poured through the tall arched windows, casting long, eerie shadows across the rows of dusty wooden pews.

At the far end of the altar stood the magnificent stained-glass window depicting St. Jude—a vibrant masterpiece of cobalt blue, ruby red, and deep amber glass.

I walked down the central aisle, my boots echoing against the flagstone floor, until I stood directly beneath the altar.

"Look for a hidden seam," I instructed Marcus, pulling a tactical flashlight from my jacket. "Clara said behind the window."

We searched the intricate stone carving surrounding the base of the frame for ten agonizing minutes. Just as I began to fear that the file had already been discovered, my fingers brushed against a small, raised brass rosette on the carved oak lectern beside the altar.

I pressed the rosette firmly.

A soft, metallic click echoed behind the altar stone. A small, six-inch panel hinged open, revealing a velvet-lined compartment hidden deep within the masonry.

Inside lay a thick, leather-bound journal and a sealed, gold-embossed envelope stamped with the official seal of the State of Connecticut Medical Board.

I reached inside and carefully pulled out the envelope.

Inside was the original, unadulterated genetic chain-of-custody contract signed by Clara Vance, my father Harrison Carter, and the surrogate mother—a woman named Sarah Jenkins—dated twelve years ago.

Attached to the contract was a signed, notarized affidavit from my late father himself, written six months before his death:

I, Harrison Carter, execute this secret codicil to my estate to ensure the protection of my family's future. Knowing my former partner Julian Sterling possesses an insatiable greed for control of Carter Global, I have authorized Dr. Clara Vance to create and hold in secure cryogenic preservation a legal biological heir using my son Nathan's preserved genetic material. Should Julian ever attempt to execute a hostile takeover using manufactured corporate technicalities, this child shall immediately inherit 51% of all class-A voting shares upon his birth, under the sole, unchallengeable guardianship of my son Nathan.

My breath caught in my throat. My father hadn't been tricked by Julian twelve years ago. He had anticipated Julian's betrayal from the very beginning. He had created Noah as a ultimate fail-safe—a living shield designed to protect our family's legacy and ensure that Julian Sterling could never steal the company we had built with our sweat and blood.

"Nathan," Marcus whispered urgently from the chapel doorway. "We have a problem."

I snapped the folder shut and shoved it inside my coat. "What is it?"

"My team monitoring St. Jude's Hospital just called," Marcus said, his voice laced with panic. "Two men posing as state welfare officers just entered the cardiac unit. They’re attempting to forcibly transfer Lily’s grandmother, Rose, to an unregistered medical transport vehicle!"

"And Lily?" I demanded, my blood boiling.

"Lily is still at the main estate with Mrs. Harris," Marcus replied. "But if Julian gets his hands on Rose, he’ll use her life to force Lily into testifying that you kidnapped the baby!"

"Not on my watch," I snarled, sprinting down the aisle toward the chapel exit. "Call Vanguard security team Bravo to intercept that ambulance! We're heading to St. Jude's right now!"
