Chapter 6 - The Hospital Standoff

The rain had returned with a vengeance by the time my armored SUV tore into the emergency bay driveway of St. Jude’s Hospital, its high beams cutting through the downpour.

I didn't wait for Marcus to park. I threw the door open before the vehicle came to a complete stop and vaulted up the concrete steps into the hospital lobby.

The third-floor cardiac wing was in total chaos.

Nurses were shouting, security alarms were blaring, and two large men in dark grey suits were attempting to push a medical gurney containing a frail, white-haired woman toward the service elevator. An IV line was swinging wildly from the gurney's pole.

"STOP RIGHT THERE!" I roared, my voice echoing down the sterile corridor like a thunderclap.

The two men spun around, their hands reaching instinctively inside their jackets for concealed shoulder holsters.

Before they could draw their weapons, Marcus and two Vanguard security officers burst through the double doors behind me, their sidearms raised and aimed directly at the attackers' chests.

"Drop your hands!" Marcus commanded, his voice cold and lethal. "Federal agents are en route! Move an inch and you die here!"

The two men froze, assessing the overwhelming force facing them. The lead operative—a scarred man with cold, lifeless eyes—slowly raised his hands into the air, a cruel, mocking smile spreading across his face.

"Mr. Carter," the scarred man sneered. "You're making a huge mistake. We have official authorization from the state medical board to transfer this patient to an elite long-term care facility in Jersey."

"Show me the court order," I said, stepping right up to him, looking him dead in the eye. "Because my legal team has a signed emergency protective order barring anyone associated with Sterling Holdings from coming within five hundred yards of Rose Miller."

"You think a piece of paper stops Julian Sterling?" the man whispered, his eyes gleaming with malice. "By this time tomorrow, your company will be stripped from you, your son will be in a state facility, and this old woman will be dead in a ditch."

Before he could finish his sentence, I grabbed him by his lapels, slammed him violently against the concrete wall, and ripped his security badge from his suit.

"Tell Julian," I whispered directly into his ear, my voice vibrating with terrifying fury, "that if he ever touches another member of my family, I won't use the courts. I won't use lawyers. I will use every dollar of my fortune to hunt him to the ends of the earth and erase him from existence."

I shoved him toward Marcus. "Disarm them, zip-tie them to the handrails, and hand them over to the state police."

I turned quickly toward the gurney. Rose Miller was sitting up slightly, her frail hands trembling, her pale face filled with terror. Her warm hazel eyes—the exact same eyes as Lily's—looked up at me with profound relief.

"Mr... Mr. Carter?" Rose whispered softly, her voice raspy from the oxygen mask.

I immediately softened my posture, kneeling beside her gurney and gently taking her cold, frail hand in mine.

"You're safe, Rose," I said gently. "My name is Nathan Carter. Lily is safe at my home. She’s eaten, she’s warm, and she’s been fighting like a lion to make sure you and Noah are protected."

Rose’s eyes welled with heavy tears. She squeezed my hand with surprising strength for a woman who had just survived heart failure. "Lily... she told me about the baby... she said you were a good man..."

"Your granddaughter saved my son's life, Rose," I said, kissing the back of her weathered hand. "And I give you my solemn word as a Carter that as long as I live, neither of you will ever have to worry about rent, medical bills, or safety ever again. You are part of my family now."

Rose closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of pure peace, her heart monitor returning to a steady, healthy rhythm.

I stood up, turning to Marcus. "Is Team Bravo holding the floor?"

"The police just arrived downstairs," Marcus confirmed, securing the two operatives with heavy zip-ties. "This wing is completely locked down. But Nathan... the emergency board meeting at Carter Global headquarters was just moved up. Julian called it for 9:00 AM today."

May you like

I looked at my watch. It was 6:30 AM.

"We have two and a half hours," I said, setting my jaw. "Get Dr. Harrison here to oversee Rose's transfer to my estate's medical wing. Marcus, you and I have a boardroom to crash."
