Chapter 4 - The Predator's Panic

In the affluent suburb of Madison Park, the Vargas family home—a beautiful historic estate overlooking Lake Washington—was in a state of absolute chaos.

Patricia Salgado paced the length of her lavishly decorated living room, her face pale, her expensive silk robe disheveled. Across from her sat Hector Becerra, a heavily built man in his late fifties with cold, porcine eyes and a diamond pinky ring that glinted as he aggressively chewed on an unlit cigar.

"What do you mean she vanished?" Becerra roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany coffee table, rattling the crystal glasses. "You told me she was isolated! You told me she had no friends left in this city after you cut off her allowance!"

"She doesn't!" Patricia shrieked, her voice cracked with panic. "She ran out into the storm barefoot! I tracked her to the main road, but she disappeared near the old highway path. I thought she hid in the woods! I sent two of my men out there with flashlights at dawn, but they found nothing but her muddy shoes!"

"If she goes to the police about what happened last night, Patricia, your life is over," Becerra hissed, standing up and looming over her. "And more importantly, my acquisition of Vargas Shipping falls apart. The board is already questioning my restructuring plans. If that girl surfaces with bruises and a lawyer, the feds will start looking into how your husband actually died."

"She won't go to the police," Patricia said, trying to convince herself. "She’s terrified of me. She knows I have the power to ruin her reputation. I'll just say she's having a psychological breakdown since her father's passing."

Suddenly, the front doorbell rang, the sound echoing through the empty house like a death knell.

Patricia stiffened. She walked out to the foyer, her heart hammering against her ribs. Through the frosted glass of the front door, she saw a man in a sharp black uniform holding a silver clipboard.

She opened the door cautiously. "Yes?"

"Patricia Salgado?" the courier asked, his face entirely expressionless.

"Yes."

"You have been formally served." The courier handed her a thick, wax-sealed envelope and a digital signature pad. "Sign here."

Patricia signed mechanically. The courier turned and walked down the driveway to a waiting black SUV.

Patricia tore open the envelope as she walked back into the living room. As her eyes scanned the legal document inside, the breath completely left her body. The paper shook so violently in her hands that she dropped it onto the floor.

Becerra picked it up, his brow furrowing as he read the bold lettering at the top.

"An emergency shareholder meeting?" Becerra muttered, his eyes narrowing as they landed on the bottom of the page. "Signed by Elena Vargas... dated this morning? Residence listed as... The Millennium Tower, Executive Suite A."

Becerra’s cigar dropped from his mouth. He looked up at Patricia, his face turning an ugly shade of dark purple. "The Millennium Tower? Executive Suite A is the private domain of Matthew Carranza."

Patricia gasped, her hands flying to her throat. "Carranza? The billionaire? How... why would she be with him?"

"You stupid bitch," Becerra growled, grabbing her by the collar of her robe and shaking her violently. "She didn't hide in the woods. She climbed into Matthew Carranza’s car. He’s been looking for a way to cut my throat in this city for two years, and you just handed him the perfect weapon!"

"What do we do?" Patricia cried, tears of pure terror finally spilling down her face. "Hector, please! If Matthew Carranza is backing her, we can't win!"

"We have forty-eight hours before that meeting," Becerra said, his eyes turning murderous as he threw her away from him. "Carranza thinks he can use a traumatized girl to take my empire? I’ll show him how old money fights. Call my security team. We’re going to find out exactly how deep this connection goes. If we can't get the girl back quietly, we’ll destroy her before she ever steps foot into that boardroom."
