Chapter 5 - A Different Kind of Scars

The atmosphere in the Carranza penthouse was quiet as the midweek sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long, amber shadows across the living room. Elena stood out on the private balcony, the cool evening breeze blowing through her hair. She looked down at the city, no longer feeling like a fugitive, but realizing the sheer magnitude of the storm she was about to unleash.
A soft footstep sounded behind her. She didn't flinch. She knew the cadence of his step now.
Matthew walked out onto the balcony, holding two glasses of sparkling water with lemon. He handed one to her, his fingers briefly brushing against hers. A strange, electric warmth shot up her arm, making her pulse quicken.
"You look deep in thought," Matthew said, leaning his forearms against the glass railing, staring out at the Elliott Bay.
"I was just thinking about my father," Elena said softly. "He loved this city. He used to take me down to the piers when the cargo ships came in from Asia. He was so proud of what he built. He always told me that a person's word was their most valuable asset. He had no idea that the woman he brought into our home would treat his legacy like a gambling chip."
Matthew remained silent for a long moment, his profile looking as if it were carved from granite. "Your father was right, Elena. But in our world, integrity is a luxury that requires iron walls to protect it. If you don't have the power to defend your virtue, the monsters will consume it."
Elena looked at him, noticing the way his jaw tightened whenever he spoke of the past. "You said Hector Becerra took something from you. Can I ask what it was?"
Matthew’s eyes darkened, the reflection of the city lights dancing in his pupils like tiny fires. "Four years ago, my younger brother, Julian, was running our European logistics division. He discovered that one of our shipping routes was being used by an external syndicate to traffic counterfeit pharmaceuticals—dangerous, contaminated compounds that were being distributed to low-income clinics."
Elena’s breath hitched. "Becerra."
"Becerra was the logistics architect," Matthew said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made the air feel brittle. "Julian was going to the federal prosecutors. The night before he was scheduled to testify, his car was forced off the road near Snoqualmie Pass. The police ruled it a rainy-day accident. But I found the brake lines afterward. They had been severed with surgical precision."
Elena reached out, her hand instinctively resting on Matthew’s arm. The muscles beneath his expensive jacket were hard as steel, but she felt a slight tremor of profound, repressed grief running through him.
"I'm so sorry, Matthew," she whispered, using his first name for the first time.
Matthew turned his head to look at her. The distance between them seemed to evaporate in the twilight. He looked down at her hand on his arm, then looked up into her eyes. For the first time, the hardness in his face melted away, revealing a deep, protective tenderness that terrified and thrilled her all at once.
"I spent two years hardening myself to ensure that when I finally destroyed Becerra, it would be absolute," Matthew said, his hand rising to gently trace the edge of the healing bruise on her cheek. His touch was incredibly light, like a feather against her skin. "The night you ran into my car, Elena... I thought it was just fate handing me a legal weapon. But looking at you now... I realize it was something else entirely."
"What was it?" she breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"It was a reminder," Matthew whispered, his eyes locking onto her lips. "That there are still things in this world worth protecting. Not for vengeance. But for the future."

Before she could answer, the glass doors of the balcony slid open sharply. Vance stood there, his face tight with grim urgency.
"Mr. Carranza," Vance said. "We have a breach. Becerra’s men just bypassed our secondary shell company firewalls. They know Elena is here, and they just mobilized a security convoy from their private estate in Bellevue. They are coming to the tower."
