Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Legacy

Three months later, the name Vargas Shipping had been restored to its former glory. The predatory merger had been discarded, and with the financial backing and logistical infrastructure of the Carranza Group, the firm had secured three of the largest commercial shipping contracts in the Pacific Northwest.

The Vargas mansion in Madison Park had been completely cleared of Patricia’s influence. The gaudy, expensive furniture she had bought with embezzled funds had been auctioned off, with 100% of the proceeds donated to local shelters for victims of domestic abuse.

Elena sat in her father’s old study at the mansion, looking at a framed photograph of him standing on the deck of his first cargo ship. The room had been restored to exactly how he kept it—filled with the scent of old paper, polished mahogany, and sea maps.

The door opened softly. Elena looked up to see Mrs. Gable entering, carrying a tray with two cups of hot tea and a plate of fresh shortbread.

"You've been working for five hours straight, Miss Elena," Mrs. Gable said with a warm, maternal smile as she set the tray down on the desk. "You’re exactly like your father. Once a Vargas gets an idea in their head, the world has to move out of the way."

Elena smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that had completely returned to her face over the last twelve weeks. "I just want to make sure the spring logistics reports are perfect before the board meeting tomorrow, Mrs. Gable. I owe it to everyone who stood by me."

"Well, there’s someone downstairs who thinks you've done quite enough for one day," Mrs. Gable said, a playful glint in her eyes. "He’s waiting for you on the terrace."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She stood up immediately, smoothing down her soft blue sweater. "Matthew?"

"The one and only," Mrs. Gable smiled. "Go on. The reports can wait."

Elena walked down the grand winding staircase of the mansion, no longer feeling the shadows of the past lurking in the corners. She stepped out onto the wide stone terrace that overlooked the emerald waters of Lake Washington.

Matthew Carranza was standing by the stone railing, dressed informally in a dark cashmere sweater and tailored trousers. The cool autumn air blew through his dark hair. When he heard her footsteps, he turned around, his face instantly softening into a beautiful, breathtaking smile that was reserved for her alone.

"You're late for our walk, CEO Vargas," Matthew said, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners as she approached.

"I was finishing the logistics drafts, Chief Creditor Carranza," Elena laughed, stepping into his space.

Matthew reached out, his long fingers gently tangling in her hair as he pulled her close. The embrace was warm, solid, and completely natural—a sanctuary they had built together out of the ruins of a dark storm.

"The feds finalized the sentencing recommendations for Becerra and Patricia this morning," Matthew said softly, his breath warm against her temple. "Becerra got life without parole at Florence ADX. Patricia received twelve years at a federal facility in Oregon. They are completely gone, Elena. Their names will never touch your life again."

Elena rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. "I don't think about them anymore, Matthew. When I look back at that night... the rain, the mud, the terror... I don't feel the pain anymore."

"What do you feel?" Matthew whispered, his chin resting on the top of her head.

"I feel grateful," Elena said, looking up into his eyes. "Because the storm didn't just wash away my old life. It drove me straight into yours."
