Chapter 6 - The Perimeter Breach

The transformation in Matthew was instantaneous. The tenderness vanished, replaced by the lethal efficiency of a commander under attack. He pulled Elena back into the penthouse, sliding the heavy glass doors shut and locking them with a biometric code.

"Vance, initiate Lockdown Protocol Omega," Matthew ordered, walking swiftly to his study desk. "Cut the public elevators to the top three floors. Activate the private security detail in the lobby."

"Already done, sir," Vance said, rapidly typing on his tablet. "But Becerra didn't send low-level thugs. He used a rogue private security firm called Blackwood Tactical. They have legal access codes to the building’s main maintenance shafts through a corrupt city inspector on Becerra's payroll. They are bypassing the lobby entirely. They are coming up through the freight elevator."

Elena felt a cold spike of panic shoot through her chest. "They're coming for me."

Matthew walked over to a hidden wood panel on the wall of his study. He pressed his palm against a concealed scanner. The panel slid open, revealing a state-of-the-art security monitor system displaying every camera angle of the building, alongside a small, secure gun locker. He didn't pull out a weapon; instead, he entered a series of commands into the terminal.

"Elena, look at me," Matthew said, turning to her and grabbing both her shoulders. His gaze was steady, an anchor in the middle of the rising chaos. "You are completely safe. This penthouse is a literal fortress. The glass is ballistic-grade, and the doors are reinforced steel disguised as wood. They cannot get in here before the police arrive. I want you to go into the safe room behind the wine cellar with Mrs. Gable. Now."

"What about you?" she asked, her voice trembling as she gripped his lapels. "Matthew, please don't go down there."

"I am not going down anywhere," Matthew said, a cold, calculated smile appearing on his face. "I am going to let them reach the 58th floor landing. And then I am going to trap them like rats."

Mrs. Gable appeared from the kitchen, her face pale but resolute. "Come along, Miss Elena. Let's let Mr. Carranza do his work."

Elena was led down to the concealed safe room—a reinforced, hidden bunker behind the expansive wine cellar. The heavy steel door sealed shut with a soft hiss, leaving them in a brightly lit, high-tech room equipped with survival supplies and a wall of security monitors.

Elena rushed to the monitors, her eyes scanning the screens. She saw the freight elevator doors open on the 58th floor—the utility level just below the penthouse living quarters. Four men dressed in dark tactical gear, faces covered with balaclavas, stepped out holding heavy breaching equipment.

They moved with military precision toward the private staircase that led directly up into Matthew’s penthouse.

But the moment the leader’s foot touched the first step of the staircase, the entire landing erupted in a blinding flash of white light and a high-frequency acoustic squeal. It was a non-lethal defense system—a sonic deterrent that immediately sent the tactical team to their knees, their hands tearing at their ears in absolute agony.

Simultaneously, heavy steel security grates dropped from the ceiling behind and in front of them, locking them into a three-meter concrete corridor.

On the screen, Matthew walked out onto the observation balcony overlooking the staircase landing. He was holding a glass of scotch, completely unbothered by the chaos below. He looked down at the trapped, writhing men through the ballistic glass.

He pressed a button on the intercom. "Welcome to the Carranza Group, gentlemen. The Seattle Police Department’s SWAT team was dispatched five minutes ago for a suspected terrorist incursion. You have exactly three minutes to think about how much Hector Becerra paid you to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

Elena watched the screen, her heart pounding with a mixture of awe and profound relief. The attack was over before it had even begun. Matthew hadn't just protected her; he had completely dismantled the threat without shedding a single drop of blood.

Ten minutes later, the monitors showed the Seattle police flooding the landing, arresting the incapacitated intruders.

The safe room door opened, and Matthew stood there, his suit unwrinkled, his expression completely calm. He held out his hand to Elena.

"The perimeter is secure," Matthew said softly. "The trash has been cleared. Now, it's time to prepare for Thursday morning."
