Chapter 1 - The Mark of the Phantom

The temperature inside Villa Moretti dropped to sub-zero in less than a second.
Under the grand crystal chandelier, Alessandro Moretti remained on one knee in front of my daughter. His large hand, usually reserved for signing multimillion-dollar port contracts or giving lethal orders, gently held the ear of Emma’s faded blue wool rabbit. His thumb brushed over the small, hidden black embroidery tucked inside the inner lining: a stylized, two-headed viper coiled around a dagger.
The symbol of Il Fantasma—The Phantom.
It was the insignia of a shadowy syndicate that had attempted to assassinate Alessandro’s father five years ago, an elusive network that had effectively vanished into thin air—until tonight.
"Where did she get this rabbit?" Alessandro repeated. His voice wasn't raised, but it carried a razor-sharp edge that made the twelve crime bosses standing in the adjacent ballroom stiffen.
My knees trembled inside my simple cotton housekeeper’s skirt. I instinctively stepped forward, placing a protective hand on Emma’s shoulder. "I... I bought it at a vintage flea market near the Navigli canal two years ago," I stammered, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird. "It was in a box of old donated children's toys. It was five euros. I swear on my life, Mr. Moretti, I don't know what that symbol means!"
Alessandro didn't look up at me immediately. He kept his dark eyes fixed on my three-year-old daughter.
Emma didn't flinch. She reached out with her small hand and patted Alessandro’s cheek, right over a faint, pale scar near his jawline. "Don't be mad at Mr. Bunny," she whispered softly. "He keeps bad dreams away."
A flicker of profound emotion crossed Alessandro’s icy features before his mask of iron resolved once more. He stood up smoothly, his tall, broad-shouldered frame blocking us from the room of armed mobsters.
"The two-headed viper was never made public," Alessandro announced, turning his cold gaze toward the twelve family leaders. "Only four people in Europe knew the exact design of the Phantom's personal seal. My father, myself... and the traitor inside the syndicate who financed the hit."
Silence, thick and suffocating, descended upon the corridor.
Vivian Romano, her red designer dress pooling around her heels, took a nervous step backward. "Alessandro, darling, this is absurd! You’re listening to a maid and her bastard child! Someone probably tossed a useless toy in the trash!"
"The stitch work is handcrafted using silk thread from the Como mills," Alessandro said calmly, pulling a sleek, silver pocket knife from his suit vest and carefully cutting the tiny black emblem from the toy without damaging the wool. "And more importantly... this thread is coated in a chemical tracer used exclusively by my internal security team to mark classified physical ledgers."
The room erupted into muffled gasps.
Don Ricci, the elderly, white-haired boss of the Genoese families, leaned heavily on his gold-headed cane. "Moretti... are you saying the Phantom's mark was stitched using your family's proprietary materials?"
"I am saying," Alessandro replied, his voice dropping into a lethal register, "that whoever made this toy for a child two years ago had direct access to my family's private vaults. And they used a innocent child's toy to smuggle a micro-encrypted drive out of my estate."
He gently squeezed the interior padding of the blue rabbit's ear. His fingers met a tiny, hard object hidden deep inside the wool stuffing.
He pulled out a silver micro-chip no larger than a fingernail.

Vivian’s face drained of every last drop of color. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
"Close the gates," Alessandro ordered into the comms unit on his lapel. "Nobody leaves Villa Moretti tonight."
