Chapter 6 - The Siege of the West Wing

The sound of gunfire echoing through the stone subterranean corridors of Villa Moretti sounded like thunder trapped inside a cave.

Marco led us through the narrow, secret passages behind the wine cellar walls. The air smelled of aged oak, dust, and gunpowder. High above us, the heavy thud of tactical boots and breaking wood signaled that the attackers had breached the ground-floor foyer.

"In here! Fast!" Marco instructed, shoving open a heavy round steel door that looked like the entrance to a bank vault.

Inside, the room was brightly lit, equipped with leather cots, medical supplies, and a bank of high-definition security monitors displaying every camera feed across the thirty-acre estate.

I set Emma down on one of the leather cots, wrapping her in a warm wool blanket. "Stay here, baby. Mommy needs to see what’s happening."

I walked over to the bank of security monitors. My blood ran cold.

On Screen Four—the grand marble entrance hall where Vivian had slapped me three weeks ago—a war was raging.

Eight men in unmarked black tactical gear were firing automatic weapons toward the grand staircase. But Alessandro wasn't hiding behind cover.

Moving with lethal, terrifying grace, Alessandro flanked the attackers from the second-floor balcony. He moved like a shadow, taking down two mercenaries with precise shots before they even realized he was above them.

"He’s incredible," I whispered under my breath, my heart pounding with a mixture of fear and profound awe.

"He was trained by the Italian Special Forces before his father was murdered," Marco explained, monitoring the perimeter feeds on a second screen. "Alessandro isn't just a businessman with a title, Mrs. Bennett. He is the reason the twelve families unified."

Suddenly, on Screen Two—the North Garden entrance—I saw something that made my breath stop.

A ninth mercenary, carrying a heavy black backpack and a remote detonator, was creeping along the service corridor directly above our underground vault.

He wasn't trying to clear the house. He was planting a thermite breaching charge on the master support column directly above the wine cellar.

"Marco! Look!" I screamed, pointing at Screen Two. "He’s setting a bomb over the vault foundation!"

Marco’s face went pale. "If that column collapses, the entire East Wing will cave in on us!"

Marco immediately reached for his rifle, but before he could step toward the vault door, a sudden burst of automatic fire shattered the camera feed on Screen Two.

The communications line buzzed with static.

"Marco!" Alessandro’s voice boomed through the speakers, laced with raw urgency. "A secondary breach team is near the cellar! Do not open the vault door under any circumstances!"

"Boss, they're planting charges on Column Four!" Marco yelled back into his comms. "If they detonate, the vault ceiling won't hold!"

A agonizing silence hung over the line for two seconds.

"Hold your position," Alessandro commanded, his voice turning into pure, unyielding granite. "I’m coming down."
