Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of Milan

By six o'clock the following morning, the sun rose over a peaceful, golden Milan skyline.
The siege of Villa Moretti was over. All fourteen mercenaries had been neutralized or captured by the combined forces of the Moretti enforcers and the Italian State Police, who arrived shortly after the firefight ended.
The last remnants of the Phantom network had been completely destroyed, their leadership exposed by the encrypted chip Emma had carried inside her wool rabbit.
The grand estate was undergoing heavy repairs, but inside the private master wing, the sun was streaming through pristine floor-to-ceiling windows.
Alessandro sat on the edge of the large four-poster bed, his shoulder wrapped in clean white surgical bandages.
I stood in front of him, carefully adjusting the buttons of his clean silk shirt over the dressing.
"You should be resting," I said softly, my fingers lingering near his collarbone. "Dr. Rossi said you lost a lot of blood."
Alessandro reached up, gently capturing my wrists in his warm hands. He pulled me slightly closer, forcing me to look directly into his deep, dark eyes.
"The doctor doesn't know what he's talking about," Alessandro said, his voice soft, rich, and filled with a profound tenderness that sent a shiver through my entire body. "I have never felt more alive in my life."
He looked toward the window, where Emma was sitting on a plush velvet rug, happily playing with her blue wool rabbit—now carefully restitched and cleaned by the estate's finest tailors.
"When my father died, Clara," Alessandro admitted quietly, "I thought my life was meant to be lived entirely in the cold. I believed that power, fear, and control were the only things that mattered in this world."
He raised one hand, his long fingers gently tracing the line of my jawline, right where Vivian had struck me three weeks ago.
"And then a brave housekeeper walked into my home," he whispered, "and brought her incredible daughter, who taught me that a simple cartoon bandage and a blue rabbit carry more power than a thousand armed men."
My breath hitched in my throat. Tears blurred my vision, but for the first time in my life, they weren't tears of grief or exhaustion. They were tears of pure, overwhelming joy.
"Alessandro..." I breathed.
"I love you, Clara," he said, the formidable crime boss of Milan laying his entire heart bare before me without a single trace of fear. "I love your courage, your kindness, and your fierce, beautiful soul. And I love Emma as if she were my own blood."

He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket, opening it to reveal a breathtaking ring featuring a rare, brilliant blue diamond surrounded by delicate white gold leaves.
"I don't want you to be my housekeeper, Clara," Alessandro said softly, looking up into my eyes. "I want you to be my wife. I want you to be the Queen of Villa Moretti."
