Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Viper

The serenity of our new life was shattered three weeks later.
Emma’s ear surgery at San Raffaele Hospital had been a resounding success. For the first time in her life, my daughter could hear soft whispers, the chirping of birds in the garden, and the gentle music playing from her lullaby box without pain.
We celebrated with a small family dinner in the private dining room—just Alessandro, Emma, and me. For one brief, beautiful evening, we felt like a real family, laughing over homemade gnocchi and apple tart.
But at midnight, the alarms across Villa Moretti began to wail.
Red emergency lights flashed through the high corridors. The heavy steel shutters automatically slammed down over every window, sealing the mansion into an impenetrable bunker.
I woke up instantly, throwing a silk robe over my nightgown and rushing into Emma’s room. She was sitting up in bed, clutching her blue rabbit, her wide brown eyes filled with terror.
"Mommy!" she cried out. "The red lights are angry!"
Before I could reach her bed, the bedroom door swung open.
Alessandro strode into the room, wearing a tactical vest over a black shirt, a silver firearm held firmly in his right hand. Marco followed behind him, carrying a heavy tactical chest.
"Alessandro! What's happening?" I begged, picking Emma up and pulling her against my chest.
"A remnant squad of the Phantom network," Alessandro reported coldly, his eyes darting toward the sealed steel shutters. "They know Vivian was transferred to federal custody yesterday. They realize the entire syndicate is being dismantled, and they’re launching a desperate suicide strike against the villa."
"How many?" Marco asked into his headset.
"Fourteen hostiles breached the outer perimeter gate," the security comms crackled. "They have heavy explosive charges!"
BOOM.
A massive explosion rattled the foundations of the mansion. The glass crystal wall sconces shattered, raining sparkling dust onto the carpeted floor.
Emma screamed, hiding her face in my neck.
Alessandro didn't panic. He stepped closer, placing a hand on the back of my head, pulling both Clara and Emma against his sturdy chest for a brief, fierce second.
"Listen to me carefully, Clara," Alessandro commanded, looking deep into my eyes. "There is a reinforced escape vault beneath the wine cellar. Marco will lead you there. It has an independent oxygen supply, concrete walls three feet thick, and a direct line to the state police headquarters."
"What about you?" I cried out, grabbing his tactical vest. "Alessandro, don't go out there! They have explosives!"
A dark, dangerous smile spread across Alessandro’s handsome face—the smile of the Apex Predator of Milan asserting his dominance.

"This is my home, Clara," he said softly, kissing Emma’s forehead before pressing his lips briefly, tenderly, against my temple. "Nobody attacks my family and walks out alive."
He turned on his heel, racked the slide of his weapon with a sharp CLICK-CLACK, and vanished down the dark, alarm-lit corridor into the storm.
