Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Snow

The silenced gunshots outside were muffled by the thick stone walls of the old barn, but the metallic clack of brass shell casings hitting the frozen pavement rang painfully clear in Maeve’s ears.

"Marcus, stay down!" Maeve hissed, her voice cutting through the dim red glow of the emergency lights.

Marcus scrambled behind the reception desk, his face drained of color. Argos, despite his blindness and severe injuries, scrambled to his feet. His massive body trembled, not with fear, but with an instinct so deeply wired into his bloodline that even agony couldn't suppress it. His dark lip curled back, exposing yellowed, formidable canines, and a deep, gut-rumbling growl resonated from his chest.

"Easy, Argos... down," Maeve whispered, placing a steadying hand on his tense neck.

The heavy oak back door exploded inward.

Three men in tactical gear, their faces obscured by ballistic masks, swept into the corridor. They moved with terrifying, practiced precision—not street thugs, but military-trained mercenaries.

"Clear the ward!" one of them barked in a low, gravelly voice. "Find the dog and destroy the hard drives!"

Maeve’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She snatched a heavy stainless-steel surgical tray from the counter and a jar of concentrated rubbing alcohol. As the lead intruder kicked open the door to Isolation Room Two, Maeve didn't hesitate. She threw the alcohol straight into his goggles and slammed the heavy metal tray across his face with all the strength in her shoulders.

The man grunted, staggering back as the alcohol blinded his visor. Argos exploded forward. Blind, bleeding, and burning with fever, the giant Cane Corso launched his ninety-pound frame directly into the intruder’s torso.

The force of the impact drove the man into the hallway wall. Argos’s jaws clamped around the tactical vest over the man’s throat, thrashing violently.

"Get off him!" the second mercenary shouted, raising a silenced pistol toward Argos.

"No!" Maeve screamed, throwing her body over the dog just as a bullet shattered the glass wall behind them.

Before the shooter could fire a second time, a thunderous roar echoed from the rear entrance. A shotgun blast tore through the door frame, catching the second mercenary in the chest and throwing him backward into the hallway.

Dante Caruso stepped through the smoke.

He wore no body armor, no gloves—just his dark wool coat and a heavy, matte-black Colt .45 in his hand. His expression was as cold and relentless as the winter storm outside. Behind him, his remaining security guard, bleeding from a shoulder wound, secured the perimeter.

Dante didn't fire again. He stepped over the fallen men, grabbed the lead mercenary by the throat, and slammed his head into the stone floor until the man went limp.

"Maeve," Dante’s voice was dangerously calm. "Are you hit?"

Maeve dragged herself up, clutching Argos’s harness. "No... no, I’m fine. Marcus is in the front lobby. Dante, they knew he was here. They tracked him!"

She thrust the custom leather collar into Dante’s hands, pointing to the peeled lining and the blinking red LED light inside.

Dante stared at the tiny transmitter. A dark, terrifying realization settled into his eyes. His jaw set so tight the skin around his cheekbones went pale.

"This isn't a hit," Dante said quietly, his eyes turning to the shattered glass. "It’s a cleanup operation. They wanted the dog dead before I could realize what they did to him."

"What did they do to him?" Maeve asked, her breath catching in her throat.

Dante looked down at Argos, who was panting heavily at Maeve’s feet, his blind eyes searching the dark air. "They didn't just torture him, Maeve. They conditioned him. Argos wasn't taken to hurt me. He was taken to be reprogrammed."

Before Maeve could ask what that meant, the sound of sirens echoed faintly in the distance, cutting through the freezing air.

"My men will clear this up," Dante said, placing a firm, warm hand on Maeve’s shoulder. "You and the dog are coming with me now. You are no longer safe here, Dr. Hart."

Maeve looked at her destroyed clinic, then down at the blind dog clinging to her side. She realized with a chilling certainty that her quiet life was officially over.
