Chapter 6 - The Broken Command

The sight was terrifying.

The massive, ninety-pound blind Cane Corso charged into the grand hallway like an unstoppable freight train. His eyes were milky white, his body covered in bandages, but his muscle memory was pure lethal force.

He was not hunting Julian.

The acoustic trigger programmed into his brain was designed to target the closest source of human heartbeat paired with Dante’s voice.

"Dante!" Maeve screamed.

Argos turned instantly toward the sound of Dante’s sudden intake of breath. The dog launched himself across the polished floor, his jaws aiming directly for Dante’s throat.

Dante didn't draw his gun. He didn't step back. He stood his ground, opening his arms wide, refusing to defend himself against the dog that had once saved his life.

"Argos, NO!" Dante shouted.

The sound of Dante’s voice triggered the second wave of the conditioning. Argos lunged—

BANG!

Maeve didn't shoot a gun. She grabbed a heavy brass floor vase from the entryway and slammed it violently against the iron banister.

The metallic shockwave shattered the ultrasonic frequency hanging in the air.

At the exact same instant, Maeve threw herself between Dante and the leaping hound, dropping to her knees and wrapping her arms firmly around Argos’s thick neck, pulling his head down into her lap.

"Argos! STAY!" Maeve roared with absolute command, her scent flooding the dog's nostrils. "Look at me! Smell me! You are good! You are safe!"

The giant dog crashed into her, the impact knocking the wind out of her lungs. His jaws snapped shut inches from Maeve’s ear, his hot breath washing over her face.

Silence fell over the foyer.

Argos trembled violently, his heavy body shaking as the agonizing sensory overload subsided. He began to sniff franticly at Maeve’s neck, recognizing the lavender soap, the medical antiseptic, and the calm, unwavering warmth of the woman who had saved him in the snow.

Slowly, the tension drained from his massive frame. He whimpered—a small, childlike sound—and pressed his blind face into Maeve’s chest.

Across the foyer, Julian stood with his hand still in his pocket, his face pale with utter shock. The weapon had failed.

Dante stepped forward, his eyes burning with an ancient, murderous fury. He drew his Colt .45 and pointed it directly at Julian’s forehead.

"You have five seconds to get out of my sight," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Before I forget that your mother was my sister."

Julian backed out the door, staggering into the snow, his confidence completely destroyed.
