Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

That night, the atmosphere inside the Caruso estate was silent as a grave.

Maeve sat on the rug in Dante’s private study, her fingers gently combing through Argos’s fur. The dog had not left her side since the incident in the hallway.

Dante poured two glasses of amber liquid and walked over, sitting on the floor beside her—a posture no mob boss in Philadelphia had ever seen him take.

"You saved my life today, Maeve," Dante said softly, handing her a glass. "And you saved his."

"He didn't want to hurt you, Dante," Maeve said, looking into his eyes. "When the trigger went off, he was in agony. He was reacting to terror, not hatred."

"I know," Dante murmured. He reached out, his large, rough hand touching Argos’s head. The dog didn't flinch. He leaned into Dante’s touch, letting out a soft sigh.

Dante looked up at Maeve. In the dim firelight, the boundaries between them seemed to dissolve. The ruthless mob syndicate leader was gone; only a tired, deeply protective man remained.

"I cannot allow Julian to hurt you or this dog ever again," Dante said, his voice laced with profound sincerity. "Tomorrow night is the council meeting at the Blackwood Club. Julian will have his armed loyalists there. He plans to force a vote to remove me."

"Then don't go," Maeve pleaded, taking his hand impulsively. "It’s a trap, Dante. Stay here."

Dante looked at her hand wrapped around his, a soft, rare smile appearing on his face. "If I don't go, he wins. He takes everything I built, and he will use that power to hunt you down to eliminate any witnesses." He raised her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently. "I have to end this. For my family, for Argos, and for you."

Maeve felt a shudder run through her heart. She realized in that moment that she had fallen in love with this dangerous, honorable man.

"Then you aren't going alone," Maeve declared fiercely.

Dante raised an eyebrow. "Maeve, it is a room filled with murderers."

May you like

"It’s a room filled with men who think they know everything about power," Maeve corrected. "And we have the one thing they never counted on."

She looked down at Argos, whose ears perked up at the sound of her voice.
