Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Iron

The Caruso estate in Bucks County was less of a home and more of a fortress. Surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls, security cameras, and razor wire hidden behind immaculate pine trees, it stood as a monument to a life lived under constant threat.

Dante’s private vehicle swept through the iron gates just as night fell again. Maeve sat in the back of the armored SUV, Argos’s heavy head resting in her lap. The dog had been sedated to manage his pain, his breathing steady but shallow.

The interior of the estate was surprisingly warm, filled with dark hardwood, leather-bound books, and classic art. Yet the air smelled of gun oil, expensive whiskey, and old tobacco.

"My personal medical team has set up an operating suite in the east wing," Dante said as he walked Maeve through the grand hallway. "It has clean air filtration, hyperbaric equipment, and whatever supplies you need. Name it, and it will be here within an hour."

"I don't need a golden cage, Dante," Maeve said, stopping in her tracks, her boots echoing against the marble floor. "I need answers. Who were those men? And why did Julian look at me like I was a target last night?"

Dante turned to her. In the soft light of the chandelier, the silver at his temples stood out, emphasizing the deep lines carved into his face by years of war and loss.

"Julian is my late brother’s son," Dante said slowly. "When my brother died, I raised Julian as my own. I gave him everything—education, authority, a seat at the head of the Caruso enterprises. But Julian has a disease that money cannot cure."

"Ambition?" Maeve guessed.

"Impatience," Dante corrected. "He believes my methods are obsolete. He wants to align our family with the Russian syndicates in New York—men who traffic in drugs and human beings. I refused. Three months ago, I began restructuring the family assets to turn them completely legitimate. Julian saw his inheritance slipping away."

Maeve gasped softly. "So he orchestrated Argos’s kidnapping?"

"It’s worse than that," Dante said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Julian didn't want to kill me himself. He knew my security detail would tear him apart. He needed an assassin who could get close to me. Someone I trusted without hesitation."

Maeve felt the blood drain from her face as she looked down at the blind Cane Corso lying at her feet.

"No..." she breathed. "You can't mean..."

"Argos," Dante said grimly. "They didn't just burn his eyes out with chemicals, Maeve. They used auditory triggers and pain conditioning. They turned my most loyal protector into a sleeper weapon designed to tear out my throat the moment he heard a specific command."
