Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Victory

Three years later.
The sun shone brightly over the high-security courtyard of the State Correctional Institution.
A heavy steel door opened, and Daniel Carter stepped out into the dusty exercise yard wearing his stained orange prison uniform.
His hair was thinning and gray, his posture stooped, his hands calloused from daily manual prison labor. His life was defined by strict schedules, cold metal trays, and sixteen hours a day in a six-by-eight-foot concrete cell.
He walked over to the concrete bench near the chain-link fence, sitting down heavily beside another inmate who was flipping through a glossy national business magazine.
"Hey, Carter," the inmate said, tossing the magazine onto Daniel's lap. "Isn't that your ex-wife?"
Daniel’s hands trembled as he picked up the magazine.
It was the special annual edition of Forbes Magazine: THE WORLD'S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN BUSINESS.
Covering the entire front page was a stunning, full-color portrait of Emily Sterling.
She was forty years old now, looking more radiant, powerful, and majestic than ever. She stood on the balcony of the newly constructed fifty-story Sterling Tower in downtown Chicago, holding the hand of a handsome, gentle-eyed man—her new husband, a renowned international human rights attorney whom she had married in a private ceremony in Italy the year before.
Beside them stood a sweet, dark-haired two-year-old girl—their daughter, Victoria.
Underneath the photograph was a quote printed in bold gold lettering:
“The day I lost everything was the day I realized I already possessed everything I needed to win.”
Daniel stared at the photograph for a long, agonizing time.
He looked at Emily’s glowing, happy face. He looked at the loving, protective way her new husband held her hand. He looked at the magnificent city skyline behind her that carried her father’s name in giant, glowing white letters.
A single, bitter tear rolled down Daniel's hollow cheek, dropping onto the glossy page, smudging the gold lettering of her quote.
He realized then the ultimate, absolute truth of his fate:
Emily hadn't destroyed him out of vengeance or malice. She hadn't spent her life hating him or plotting against him.
She had simply moved on, grown higher, and built a glorious, beautiful life where Daniel Carter was nothing more than an insignificant speck of dust in her past.
He closed the magazine, set it gently on the concrete bench, and walked back toward the dark, cold steel doors of his cell as the evening whistle blew.
High above the city, in her sunlit office on the top floor of Sterling Tower, Emily Sterling stood by her window, holding her sleeping daughter in her arms, looking out over the endless blue horizon of Lake Michigan.
