Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Century

Two months later, the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity for the preliminary hearing of The State of Illinois v. Daniel Carter.
The courtroom was filled with reporters, former colleagues, and curious spectators.
Daniel sat at the defense table in an oversized, faded orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed to a leather belt around his waist. He had lost twenty pounds; his hair was unkempt, his face hollow, his eyes sunken and vacant.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery, surrounded by her legal team, was Emily.
She wore a royal blue wool coat over a crisp white silk blouse, her short hair styled perfectly. She looked radiant, strong, and completely composed.
Daniel turned his head slightly, his eyes catching hers for the first time in nearly three months.
He tried to mouth the words, "I'm sorry," but Emily's expression didn't change at all. She looked at him as if he were a complete stranger—a ghost from a life she had long since left behind.
The judge slammed his gavel down. "Court is now in session."
The prosecution called its key witness: Vanessa Brooks.
Dressed in a plain gray prison uniform, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, Vanessa took the witness stand. Under oath, she spent two hours laying out every detail of Daniel's crimes.
She detailed how Daniel had forged Emily's signature on corporate proxy releases, how he had bragged about taking over her father's company, and how he had explicitly planned to bankrupt Emily emotionally and financially so she wouldn't have the strength to fight back in a divorce court.
"And what about the incident in the executive office on November 12th?" the prosecutor asked.
Vanessa hung her head, tears dripping onto her hands. "Daniel told me Emily was coming to the office to make a scene. He told me to 'put her in her place' so she would be embarrassed and leave. When I attacked her in the restroom... Daniel stood near the door. He didn't try to stop me. He laughed."
A collective murmur of disgust swept through the courtroom gallery.
The judge slammed his gavel down sharply. "Order in the court!"
Daniel’s court-appointed public defender sat beside him, shaking his head in defeat. He didn't even attempt to cross-examine Vanessa. The paper trail, combined with her testimony and the forensic banking audits, was an impenetrable wall of guilt.
The prosecutor stood up for her closing statement.
"Your Honor, Daniel Carter did not simply commit financial fraud. He systematically attempted to steal the legacy of an innocent woman who trusted him. He abused his position, exploited his marriage, and engaged in calculated cruelty."
The judge looked down at Daniel over his half-moon spectacles, his face etched with deep disgust.
"Mr. Carter," the judge said, his voice booming through the silent courtroom. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such arrogant greed and utter lack of human decency. You betrayed your wife, destroyed a noble business reputation, and thought your charm would shield you from justice."
"Your Honor, please..." Daniel rasped, his voice shaking as he stood up trembling. "I made a mistake... I was influenced..."
"Silence!" the judge barked. "You are sentenced to fifteen years at the State Correctional Institution for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and conspiracy, with no eligibility for parole for at least ten years. Furthermore, full financial restitution of $4.2 million is ordered to be paid to the Sterling Trust immediately."
BANG!
The gavel struck the wooden block, echoing like a gunshot through the room.
Two guards grabbed Daniel by the shoulders, pulling him back toward the holding cell holding doors.

As he was dragged away in chains, Daniel turned his head back one last time, looking desperately at Emily.
Emily stood up slowly, adjusted her coat, turned her back on him, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.
