Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

Three weeks passed.
Under Emily’s sharp, decisive leadership, Sterling Logistics experienced an unprecedented turnaround.
She streamlined corporate operations, fired corrupt upper-level managers appointed by Daniel, and restored public confidence by launching a multi-million-dollar ethics initiative. Stock prices, which had plummeted during the initial scandal, surged twenty percent past their previous historical high.
Emily became a national icon—a symbol of resilience, female strength, and corporate justice.
Meanwhile, the legal net surrounding Daniel Carter and Vanessa Brooks was pulled tight.
Vanessa, unable to pay her rent or legal fees, had been forced to move into a tiny studio apartment on the south side of the city. Her reputation in the logistics industry was completely destroyed; no corporate firm would hire her even for an entry-level reception job.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, two detectives from the Chicago Police Department knocked on her door.
When Vanessa opened it, her eyes wide with fear, the lead detective held up a pair of handcuffs.
"Vanessa Brooks? You are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and felony third-degree assault."
"Assault?!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away. "I didn't assault anyone! That was just a fight between women!"
"We have security footage from the executive restroom corridor, Miss Brooks," the detective replied coldly, clicking the cuffs around her wrists. "And Mrs. Sterling's medical report documents severe scalp trauma and lacerations. You're coming with us."
An hour later, in an interrogation room at the precinct, Vanessa sat across from State Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins.
"Your situation is grim, Miss Brooks," Prosecutor Jenkins said, opening a blue folder. "The evidence of your financial involvement in Daniel Carter's shell companies is airtight. You're facing up to twelve years in state prison."
Vanessa began to cry hysterically. "It was Daniel! He made me do it! He told me he was the CEO and that everything was legal! I didn't know!"
"If you want to avoid maximum sentencing," Jenkins said, leaning forward, "we need full cooperation. We need every document, every email, every text message proving Daniel Carter knowingly forged signatures and diverted corporate funds."
Vanessa wiped her nose with a tissue, her eyes flashing with desperate betrayal. "I have everything. I saved every text message he ever sent me. I saved every email where he talked about hiding money from Emily."
"Then sign here," the prosecutor said, sliding a plea agreement across the table.

While Vanessa was signing her deal, Daniel was arrested two blocks away from a local homeless shelter, trying to sell his luxury gold watch—which turned out to be a replica—to a pawn shop owner.
When the police officers tackled him to the ground and slapped handcuffs on his wrists, Daniel didn't fight back. He lay on the cold pavement, staring up at the gray sky, completely broken.
