Chapter 5 - Desperation's Edge

While Emily was cementing her grip on Sterling Logistics, Daniel was drowning in despair.
He sat on a park bench near the river, wearing the same crumpled suit he had worn the day before. His phone, which he had plugged into an outlet at a local coffee shop earlier, suddenly vibrated.
It was a text message from his bank:
“FINAL NOTICE: Mortgage payment for 1422 Oak Ridge Lane bounced. Foreclosure proceedings initiated.”
Then another text from his personal defense attorney, a man he had paid a massive retainer to just six months ago:
“Daniel, I cannot represent you. The conflict of interest with the Sterling Trust is too severe, and your frozen assets prevent retainer authorization. You need to seek public defense representation.”
"Public defender?" Daniel muttered hysterically to himself, pulling at his hair. "I'm a CEO! I manage a billion-dollar logistics network! How can I need a public defender?!"
Desperate, broke, and losing his mind, Daniel decided there was only one person left in the world who could help him—his mother, Evelyn Carter.
Evelyn lived in a lavish waterfront estate in Naples, Florida, funded entirely by generous monthly "family allowances" that Daniel had illegally funneled from the Sterling company accounts over the past five years.
He dialed her number from a public payphone near the train station.
"Hello?" a polished, elderly woman’s voice answered.
"Mom!" Daniel cried out, tears finally breaking through his voice. "Mom, thank God! It's Daniel!"
"Daniel?" Evelyn’s tone was sharp and instantly suspicious. "Why are you calling from an unknown number? Where are you? My primary credit card was declined at the country club this morning! The manager was extremely rude to me! What is going on with the monthly transfer?"
"Mom, listen to me!" Daniel sobbed. "Emily found out everything! She locked all the accounts! She took the company, she took the house, she took the cars! She filed criminal charges against me!"
Silence hung on the line for five full seconds.
"What do you mean she took the company?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping into a harsh, cold register. "You told me you had full control! You told me that stupid girl was completely clueless!"
"She wasn't clueless, Mom! Her father set up a trust! It was a trap from the beginning!" Daniel panicked. "I need you to wire me fifty thousand dollars right now so I can hire a criminal defense lawyer! I need a place to stay!"
"Fifty thousand dollars?" Evelyn scoffed, her voice devoid of any maternal comfort. "Are you out of your mind? My accounts are linked to the Florida property trust that she just filed a lien against this morning! I had to hire my own lawyer two hours ago!"
"Mom, please!" Daniel begged. "I'm your son! I'm sitting on a park bench with thirty dollars in my pocket!"
"You fool," Evelyn spat viciously through the receiver. "You had a gold mine! You had a woman who gave you everything, a company worth hundreds of millions, and you ruined it all for some cheap executive assistant! Don't you dare call this number again—her lawyers are monitoring my lines!"
Click.
The line went dead.
Daniel held the plastic receiver against his ear, listening to the hollow dial tone.
The mother he had catered to, the woman he had stolen millions for, had abandoned him without a second thought the moment the money stopped flowing.
He dropped the receiver, stumbling backward onto the pavement.
It was then that he saw a newspaper lying on the top of a trash bin nearby.
On the front page was a massive photograph of Emily, standing tall and beautiful outside the headquarters building, her short hair making her look fierce, regal, and entirely untouchable.
The headline read:
EMILY STERLING TAKES THE HELM: THE QUEEN OF LOGISTICS RECLAIMS HER EMPIRE.

Daniel sank onto his knees on the dirty sidewalk, burying his face in his dirty hands as the bitter realization finally hit him:
Emily had never been his victim. He had simply been a guest in her empire—and he had just been thrown out forever.
