Chapter 2 - A Dangerous Invitation

The next two days were a blur of adrenaline, caffeine, and a lingering sense of paranoia. Every time Bianca turned a corner in the hospital, she expected to see Tristan’s imposing figure. He didn't return to the hospital during her shifts, but his presence remained. Every morning, a massive bouquet of fresh, white gardenias arrived at the nurse's station, addressed simply to: The girl who ran.
"Okay, spill," Marcus demanded on Thursday morning, staring at the latest arrangement of flowers. "Who is the secret billionaire suitor? Are you secretly a princess?"
"It's nothing, Marcus. Just a grateful family member," Bianca muttered, hiding her face behind a clipboard.
"Grateful? Bianca, those are gardenias from an elite florist on the Upper East Side. That bouquet costs more than my rent."
Bianca sighed, feeling a mix of irritation and a dangerous, illicit thrill. Tristan was playing a game, and she didn't know the rules. She was a middle-class girl from Queens, struggling to buy groceries and pay her rent on time. He was a man who moved mountains with a signature. They belonged to different worlds.
Her shift ended at 7:00 PM. As she walked out of the hospital's main entrance, the autumn air was crisp and cool. She pulled her coat tightly around herself, looking down at her phone to summon a rideshare.
A sleek, black SUV pulled up to the curb.
Bianca’s heart leaped into her throat. It was the exact same model. The back door opened, but this time, no driver stepped out. Instead, a tall, impeccably dressed man stepped out of the passenger side. It wasn't Tristan, but a younger man with a stern, military posture.
"Miss Mendes?" the man asked politely. "I'm Dominic, Mr. Bellamy's head of security. He requested that I offer you a ride home. He assures you this is the correct vehicle."
Bianca stared at the open door. "I can take the subway."
"Mr. Bellamy anticipated you would say that," Dominic said, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. "He also instructed me to tell you that if you refuse, he will simply have this car follow the subway train from street level. Which would be highly inconvenient for Manhattan traffic."
Bianca let out a breathless, frustrated laugh. "He is unbelievable."
"He is very occupying, yes," Dominic agreed, holding the door wider.
Knowing she was defeated, and secretly dying of curiosity, Bianca climbed inside. The leather was just as soft, the scent of cedar and amber just as intoxicating. But this time, Tristan wasn't in the back.
The car drove in silence through the glittering streets of Manhattan. Bianca expected to be taken to her cramped, older apartment in Astoria, Queens. Instead, the SUV crossed the bridge and pulled up in front of a stunning, high-end restaurant in Tribeca. The front of the restaurant was dark, the 'Closed' sign hanging on the glass door.
Dominic opened her door. "We have arrived, Miss Mendes."
"The restaurant is closed," Bianca pointed out.
"For the public, yes. Not for Mr. Bellamy."
Bianca swallowed hard. She looked down at her simple knit sweater, dark jeans, and worn boots. She looked like a tired nurse, while this place screamed extreme luxury. But pride kept her shoulders back as she stepped out of the car.
She walked into the dimly lit restaurant. The space was beautiful, filled with candlelight, exposed brick, and soft jazz playing in the background. In the center of the room sat a single table, set for two.
Tristan was standing by the bar, holding a glass of amber liquid. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, corded muscles and a glimpse of a dark tattoo peeking from his wrist. He looked devastatingly handsome, and entirely dangerous.
"You came," he said, setting his glass down.
"Your security guard threatened to cause a traffic jam," Bianca countered, keeping her distance. "And I don't like being manipulated, Mr. Bellamy."
"Tristan," he corrected softly, walking toward her. He stopped just a few feet away, his presence overwhelming her senses. "And it wasn't manipulation. It was a strong persuasion. I wanted to see you without the sterile walls of a hospital between us."
"Why?" Bianca asked, her voice trembling slightly. "You are Tristan Bellamy. You could have any woman in this city. Why are you pursuing a exhausted nurse who fell asleep in your car?"
Tristan looked at her, his dark eyes searching her face. There was an intensity in his gaze that made her feel entirely exposed.
"Because for the last ten years, every person I meet wants something from me," Tristan said, his voice dropping to a low, quiet confession. "My money, my influence, my ruin. But three nights ago, a woman climbed into my car, looked at me with no fear, only exhaustion, and fell asleep beside me. You didn't know who I was. You didn't care. For twenty minutes, I wasn't Tristan Bellamy the billionaire. I was just a man keeping a tired woman safe."

He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His touch was incredibly warm, sending a jolt of electricity through her skin.
"And when you ran," he whispered, "I felt like I had lost something I didn't even know I was looking for."
