Chapter 5 - The Fragile Line

The waiting room of the surgical wing was sterile, silent, and suffocating. Bianca sat in the corner, her uniform stained with the sweat and grime of her grueling shift, her hands trembling so violently she had to interlock her fingers to keep them still.

She wasn't allowed in the operating room. She wasn't family. She was just a nurse who had rejected him three days ago.

Why did I push him away? she thought, tears finally spilling over her lashes. He was trying to protect me. And now he’s dying.

Hours bled into one another. Around 3:00 AM, the double doors of the surgical ward swung open. Dr. Evans, one of the hospital’s top trauma surgeons, walked out, looking exhausted.

Dominic and Bianca stood up simultaneously.

"How is he?" Bianca gasped, her voice barely a whisper.

Dr. Evans sighed, rubbing his temples. "He’s a very lucky man, and he has a heart like an ox. The bullet missed his pulmonary artery by millimeters. We successfully extracted it, repaired the lung tissue, and stopped the internal bleeding. He’s in recovery now. He’ll make a full recovery, but he’s going to be in intensive care for a few days."

Bianca let out a long, shuddering sob of relief, covering her face with her hands.

"Can we see him?" Dominic asked.

"Only one person at a time, for five minutes," Dr. Evans said. He looked at Bianca, recognizing her. "Nurse Mendes, you should go home. You've been on shift for sixteen hours."

"Please, Dr. Evans," Bianca pleaded, her eyes red and swollen. "Just let me see him. Just for a minute."

Dr. Evans looked at her, then at Dominic, who gave a quiet, approving nod. "Five minutes, Bianca. Room 204 in the ICU."

Bianca walked down the dim hallways of the ICU, her heart pounding. When she pushed open the door to Room 204, the sound of the heart monitor—a steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep—was the most beautiful thing she had ever heard.

Tristan lay in the hospital bed, looking pale and vulnerable beneath the harsh fluorescent lights. He was hooked up to an oxygen mask, a nasal cannula, and several IV lines. The powerful, intimidating billionaire looked fragile, stripped of his expensive suits and formidable armor.

Bianca walked to the side of his bed. She reached out, her trembling hand gently taking his large, warm hand.

"Tristan," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I'm here."

As if hearing her voice through the fog of anesthesia, Tristan’s eyelids fluttered open. His dark eyes were unfocused at first, but as they cleared and landed on her face, a faint, weak smile touched his lips beneath the mask.

"Bianca..." he murmured, his voice incredibly hoarse.

"Don't speak," she said, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "Just rest. You're safe. The surgery was successful."

He squeezed her hand with surprising strength. He slowly pulled down the oxygen mask with his other hand, his breathing shallow.

"I told you... I wouldn't bother you again," he whispered, a faint trace of his dry humor in his eyes. "But I had to get admitted... just to see my favorite nurse."

Bianca let out a watery laugh, leaning down to press her forehead against his hand. "You are an idiot, Tristan Bellamy. A complete and utter idiot."

"I missed you," he said softly, his gaze locking onto hers with a fierce, burning intensity that even pain medication couldn't dull. "I tried to stay away. I swear I did. But the world is so cold without you."

"I'm not going anywhere," Bianca promised, kissing his knuckles. "I'm right here."

For the next three days, Bianca barely left the hospital. She worked her shifts, and the moment she was off the clock, she was in Tristan's room. She helped the ICU nurses care for him, monitored his vitals, and read to him when he was too tired to speak.

The chemistry between them, once a simmering spark, erupted into a quiet, profound bond. Without the barriers of their different worlds, they found a deep comfort in each other. Tristan's protective nature didn't fade, but it softened into a tender, fierce devotion to her safety and happiness.

But their peace was short-lived.

On the fourth night, while Tristan was sleeping, Dominic tapped on the glass of the ICU room, signaling Bianca to come outside.

"What is it, Dominic?" Bianca asked, a sense of dread returning.

"We have a problem," Dominic said, his face grim. "Julian has skipped bail. And we just received a threat. He knows Tristan is in this hospital. He knows he’s vulnerable. And he knows about you."
