Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Shadows

Bianca's breath caught in her throat. The sincerity in Tristan's eyes was terrifying. She wanted to pull away, to run back to the safety of her predictable, exhausting life. But her body refused to move. The warmth of his hand against her cheek was intoxicating.
"Tristan..." she whispered, her voice a plea she couldn't quite define.
"Eat with me," he murmured. "No strings. No expectations. Just a conversation."
She looked at the beautifully set table, then down at her simple clothes. "I'm not exactly dressed for a place like this."
Tristan’s gaze swept down her body, slow and appreciative, before returning to her eyes. "You look beautiful, Bianca. Far more beautiful than anyone else who has ever sat in this room."
Against her better judgment, Bianca nodded.
The dinner was a blur of incredible food and surprisingly easy conversation. Once Bianca moved past her initial intimidation, she found that Tristan was highly intelligent, sharp-witted, and possessing a dry, dark sense of humor that kept her laughing. He asked about her childhood, her passion for nursing, and her dreams. In turn, he spoke of his pressure-filled life, though he kept the details of his family's business vague.
"My father was a hard man," Tristan said, swirling the red wine in his glass. "He taught me that vulnerability is a liability. In my world, if you show weakness, you are destroyed."
"That sounds like a very lonely way to live," Bianca said softly, her nurse's heart aching for the boy who had been raised to be a machine.
Tristan looked at her, his eyes dark and intense. "It was. Until recently."
Before Bianca could process the weight of his words, the quiet atmosphere of the restaurant was shattered.
The heavy glass doors at the entrance suddenly rattled. Bianca turned to see three men standing outside, speaking aggressively to Dominic, who was standing guard. One of the men, a tall guy in an expensive but rumpled suit, pushed past Dominic.
Tristan’s entire demeanor changed in a millisecond.
The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by a cold, lethal stillness. He stood up slowly, his posture commanding and dangerous.
"Stay here," Tristan commanded Bianca, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.
He walked toward the entrance. Bianca, ignoring his command, stood up and followed him to the edge of the dining area, her heart pounding with a sudden, icy dread.
"Tristan!" the man who pushed past Dominic yelled. He looked disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You think you can just freeze my assets? You think you can ruin my family's legacy and walk away?"
"Julian," Tristan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer coldness of it filled the room. "You ruined your family's legacy when you embezzled twenty million dollars from our joint venture to fund your gambling debts. You are lucky you aren't in a federal penitentiary."
"You did this!" Julian screamed, stepping closer. Dominic immediately stepped between them, his hand moving toward his jacket. "You think you're untouchable, Bellamy? You're not. You have weaknesses. We all do."
Julian’s eyes suddenly darted past Tristan, landing directly on Bianca.
A cruel, desperate smile spread across Julian's face. "Well, well. Who is this? I didn't think the great Tristan Bellamy had a type. She doesn't look like your usual high-society playthings."
In a flash of pure, violent motion, Tristan stepped forward. He grabbed Julian by the collar of his jacket, slamming him against the brick wall of the restaurant. The sound was like a gunshot in the quiet room.
"If you look at her again," Tristan hissed, his face inches from Julian's, his voice sounding like gravel grinding together, "if you even breathe the same air as her, I will not just ruin your company. I will dismantle your entire life piece by piece. Do you understand me?"
Julian swallowed hard, the bravado draining from his face, replaced by absolute terror. He nodded frantically.
Tristan shoved him away, turning to Dominic. "Get him out of my sight. And ensure he never enters this borough again."
Dominic and the other guards quickly dragged Julian and his associates out into the rain.

Tristan stood in the center of the foyer, his chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. He ran a hand through his dark hair, trying to compose himself. When he turned back to Bianca, his eyes held a flicker of dread—as if he was terrified of what she would think of the monster she had just witnessed.
Bianca stood frozen, her mind spinning. The world of Tristan Bellamy wasn't just wealthy; it was violent, dangerous, and filled with enemies who would gladly use her to get to him.
