Chapter 2 - The Hospital Vigil

The storm raged outside the emergency room windows of St. Jude Memorial Hospital. Snow battered the double glass doors, but inside, the air was warm and heavy with the smell of antiseptic and rubbed alcohol.

I sat on a small plastic chair beside Claire’s bed in Room 214, holding her pale, cold hand between both of mine. On her chest lay Lily, wrapped in three layers of heated blankets, her soft breathing steady and rhythmic.

The doctor, a gray-haired veteran named Dr. Mercer, stepped into the room holding a clipboard. He looked at my military uniform, then down at Claire’s chart.

"Severe hypothermia," Dr. Mercer said quietly. "If you had arrived twenty minutes later, Staff Sergeant... your wife would have suffered permanent tissue damage, or worse. The baby’s core temperature dropped to 94 degrees. It was a miracle her mother wrapped her in her own down coat."

A cold, razor-sharp ache gripped my chest. I leaned down and kissed Claire’s forehead. Her skin was warming up, but her breathing was still shallow.

"She’s going to make a full recovery," Dr. Mercer added, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Physical recovery, at least. But the psychological shock... who would leave a mother and baby out in a blizzard like that?"

"People who think they are untouchable," I replied softly.

The door pushed open, and Christopher Vance—my cousin, and one of the few honest attorneys in our extended family—stepped into the room. He shook snow off his heavy wool coat and pulled out a briefcase.

"Daniel," Christopher whispered, looking at Claire and Lily. "My God. When you called me from the transport, I thought you were exaggerating. Are they okay?"

"They're stable," I said, stepping away from the bed so we wouldn't disturb them. "Did you bring the filings?"

Christopher pulled out a stack of legal briefs. "I filed an emergency injunction with Judge Abernathy ten minutes ago. Given the police report filed by the paramedics and the evidence of financial abuse, Abernathy signed an immediate temporary restraining order against Richard and Evelyn."

"What about the accounts?"

"Frozen," Christopher confirmed with a sharp grin. "Every single business and personal account bearing Richard’s name under Vance Logistics has been locked by federal order pending tomorrow’s audit. Your father tried to initiate a two-million-dollar wire transfer to an account in Switzerland three hours ago. The bank flagged it and blocked it."

Claire stirred in the bed. Her eyes slowly opened, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights.

"Daniel...?" she whispered, her voice rasping.

I immediately rushed to her side, kneeling by the bed and taking her hand. "I'm right here, sweetheart. You're safe. Lily is safe."

Tears trickled down Claire’s pale cheeks. "They... they took everything, Daniel. They took the house key, they took my phone, they wiped out our checking account... Evelyn told me I was nothing but a gold-digger who trapped you..."

"Shh," I hushed her softly, wiping her tears with my thumb. "They didn't take anything that we aren't going to take back ten times over. Look at me, Claire."

She looked into my eyes.

"They thought they could freeze you out," I told her, my voice filled with iron resolve. "Starting tomorrow, we strip them of their name, their house, their money, and their freedom."
