Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Strike

At 0800 hours the following morning, the snow had stopped, leaving Richmond buried under eighteen inches of glittering ice.

The corporate headquarters of Vance Logistics stood in the heart of the downtown financial district—a towering glass-and-steel structure that my grandfather had built thirty years ago.

In the 12th-floor executive board room, ten senior board members sat around a long oak table, drinking coffee and reviewing quarterly reports. At the head of the table sat my father, Richard, wearing a tailored navy suit. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a man who hadn't slept a single minute.

Beside him sat Arthur Croft, the company's chief legal counsel and Richard’s long-time co-conspirator.

"Gentlemen," Richard said, banging a brass pen against his water glass. "Let us bring this emergency session to order. We have pressing matters regarding our international shipping contracts—"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung wide open.

I walked into the room wearing my full Army Service Uniform—medals pinned, silver staff sergeant stripes gleaming on my sleeves, my combat boots clicking sharply against the polished marble floor.

Behind me walked Christopher Vance and two special agents from the Army Criminal Investigation Division.

The board members gasped. Several stood up in confusion.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard slammed his hands on the table, rising to his feet. "Daniel! This is a private corporate meeting! Get out before I have security throw you out!"

"Security won't be touching anyone today, Dad," I said calmly, stopping at the foot of the table. "In fact, security has already been instructed by federal officers to lock down all server rooms and executive offices."

Arthur Croft stood up, pulling at his collar. "Staff Sergeant Vance, you have no authority here—"

"Read the room, Croft," Christopher Vance cut in, dropping a thick stack of blue legal folders in front of every single board member. "What you are holding is a certified copy of the late Founder’s irrevocable trust, alongside a formal forensic audit conducted by federal investigators."

The board members hastily opened the folders. Whispers erupted across the table.

"Fifty-one percent voting control..." director Harrison muttered, looking up in shock. "Richard... you told us Daniel surrendered his equity when he enlisted!"

"He lied," I said, stepping closer to my father. "He forged my signature on a power-of-attorney document six weeks after I deployed overseas. He used that forged power to pass corporate resolutions that diverted over four million dollars of company capital into off-shore accounts held by his wife, Evelyn Vance."

"That's slander!" Richard roared, his face turning purple. "I built this company! You're an ungrateful, low-ranking soldier trying to launch a hostile takeover!"

"No, Dad," I said, pulling an encrypted flash drive from my pocket and plugging it into the boardroom’s master projector display.

The large screen behind Richard lit up. A high-definition financial spreadsheet appeared, detailing sixty-four illegal wire transfers, complete with IP addresses originating directly from Richard’s home computer and Arthur Croft’s law firm.

"This isn't a takeover," I said quietly, as the room went dead silent. "This is an eviction."

Special Agent Miller from CID stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his coat.

"Richard Vance," Agent Miller announced clearly, "you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft of an active duty service member, and corporate embezzlement."

The board members recoiled in horror as Agent Miller pulled Richard’s arms behind his back and clicked the handcuffs around his wrists.

My father looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief, trembling as he realized his empire had vanished in less than ten minutes.

"Daniel... please," Richard choked out, his arrogance finally shattering. "I'm your father..."

"My father died the moment he left my wife and child in the snow," I replied.
