Chapter 4 - The Fall of Evelyn

While federal officers processed Richard at the downtown precinct, I drove with Sheriff Walker to the family estate in the country.
The blizzard had cleared, leaving the long, winding driveway covered in white. The grand mansion sat quiet and imposing against the winter landscape.
Inside, my mother, Evelyn, was frantically packing designer clothes into leather trunks. She had heard about Richard’s arrest through a phone call from Croft’s secretary and was preparing to fly to her sister’s house in Palm Beach.
The front door opened. Evelyn turned around at the top of the grand staircase, clutching a pearl necklace against her chest.
"Daniel!" she cried out, her voice trembling with artificial emotion. "Thank God you're here! Your father has been detained by some rogue federal agents! It's a complete misunderstanding! You have to use your military connections to clear this up!"
I walked into the grand foyer, stopping beneath the crystal chandelier where she had stood eighteen hours ago in her silk robe while my wife froze outside.
Behind me walked Sheriff Walker and two county deputies.
"There is no misunderstanding, Mother," I said, resting my hands behind my back. "Richard’s bail hearing is at two o'clock. Bail will be denied due to flight risk."
Evelyn took a backward step, her heels clicking nervously on the marble steps. "You... you can't do this to us! What will the country club say? What will our friends think?!"
"They'll think the truth, Evelyn," Sheriff Walker said, stepping forward with an official court order. "Mrs. Vance, I have a warrant here for your arrest as a co-conspirator in grand larceny and child endangerment."
Evelyn gasped, clutching the banister. "Child endangerment?! I didn't touch that girl or her baby!"
"You changed the locks on a property legally owned by Daniel," Walker explained sternly. "You threw a mother and a six-month-old infant out into sub-zero weather during a state-declared blizzard emergency. The district attorney has filed felony reckless endangerment charges against you."
"No... no!" Evelyn shrieked, backing away toward the upper hallway. "I am Evelyn Vance! You cannot put handcuffs on me!"
"Deputy, secure her," Walker ordered.
The two deputies walked up the stairs. Evelyn screamed and kicked, knocking over a crystal vase that shattered across the hardwood floor, but within seconds, her arms were secured behind her back.
As they led her down the stairs, she looked at me with pure hatred. "You ruined us! You destroyed this family for that pathetic, poor girl!"

I looked at her, completely unbothered by her rage.
"Claire was poor in money, Mother," I said softly as they pushed her toward the police car. "But you are poor in everything that matters."
