Chapter 2 - The Trap Depths

We arrived at my parents' private estate in Greenwich—a heavily guarded sixty-acre compound that Adrian had only ever seen from the outside during our wedding, having been told it belonged to a "wealthy family friend."
For six years, I had kept my family's true identity hidden from Adrian. When we met during my second year at Harvard Law, Adrian was an ambitious, charismatic middle-manager at a financial firm. I wanted to be loved for who I was, not for the massive Vance legal empire behind my name. When I chose to step back from practice after our wedding, Adrian assumed I was just another fragile, dependent housewife. He mistook my silence for submission.
Inside the Greenwich estate's library, warm firelight washed over plush leather armchairs. Three nursemaids, retained by my mother, gently carried the triplets upstairs to a state-of-the-art nursery.
My mother sat across from me with a hot cup of tea, laying out three thick black binders on the glass table.
"While you were recovering in the hospital, Victoria," Eleanor said, using my full name, "your father and I conducted a full forensic audit of Adrian’s company, Apex Global Logistics."
"What did you find?" I asked, sipping the tea.
"Adrian didn't just cheat on you, Victoria," my mother revealed, her eyes narrowing. "His company was failing. Six months ago, he took out an illicit twelve-million-dollar private loan from an offshore syndicate represented by Vanessa Cross’s father, Richard Cross."
I gasped. "Richard Cross? The predatory lender?"
"Precisely," my mother nodded. "Vanessa didn't fall in love with Adrian. She was sent by her father to secure collateral. Adrian offered our Greenwich home—which he foolishly believed was yours to forfeit—and his company shares as security for the loan. When you refused to sign the divorce papers in the hospital, Adrian panicked. He forged your signature on the property transfer to satisfy Cross's loan terms before the deadline yesterday."
The entire disgusting puzzle fell into place.
Adrian hadn't just humiliated me out of cruelty; he was drowning in debt and using my body, my home, and my children’s trust as a shield against a syndicate of loan sharks.

"So Vanessa's Birkin..." I realized.
"Purchased with money stolen from your triplets' offshore healthcare fund," my father said, stepping into the library holding a glass of scotch. "They think they've backed you into a corner, Victoria. They have no idea they've walked straight into a legal meat grinder."
